I read a book written in the 1890's "Woodcraft" by Nessmuck The author had a canoe made form him that weighed in at 21 pounds, all wood. He hiked across Michigan with it on his back. After the trip, he had another built that weighed 14 pounds. He mentioned the company in the book and I looked them up. They're still in business.
