Thread: Wool pants wearers.

    Default Wool pants wearers.

I am wanting to buy some wool pants. I have found Filson brand carries the whipcord and Mackinaw. Can anyone comment on either styles. I live in Louisiana so super heavy may not be needed, but is there really any differant in the two styles in the real world. Or any other brands that I should look at?

You might want to check out the M1951 wool field trousers. Depending on size they can, in some cases, be found in as new condition. Also there are a number of surplus wool pants from other countries on the market. I also think L. L. Bean has both dress and outdoor wool pants.

The Filson Mac is very very warm and thick. The whipcord is much lighter weight. Don't own a pair of whipcords but would like to. hope this helps?

Almost all of the surplus wool pants are sized 34 in the waist or smaller. They would have fit me in high schooll 35 years ago.

I have several pieces from Ibex. Kinda pricey but super well made and will last forever. Plus its NOT itchy!

I checked out the Ibex. On line the styling looks odd. They are priced like the Filson. I want a more traditional style for casual wear as well as outdoor sports.

Having sold Filson clothing when I lived in Alaska in the 70s I can tell you that the clothing will hold up, as I have some items that I have outgrown but have nothing from them that I have worn out. With your location I think a pair of their wipcord pants will serve you well the mack's I think wouldbe to warm. While Ibex is good I don't think any of their pants could hold up to the wear and tear that Filson can handle.

Here are a few other brands I can think of offhand that carry wool pants:

    First Lite
    Stormy Kromer
    Johnson Woolen Mills
    Bemidji Woolen Mills
    Woolrich
    L.L. Bean
    Cabelas

Codet sell some good wool pants. The most important piece in this equation is your long underwear. I can wear a wool shirt, Carhartt pants with no trouble down to below zero with no trouble with a good set of wool long johns like ones from Icebreaker. Proper layering is the most important thing to do when outdoors year around.
