Thread: Any Ex-Jeep Guys Miss Their Jeep?

    I miss my Jeeps, even though they are all here and parked. We managed to bust every one of them the last couple weeks. Hoping to have two of them back on the road by the end of the weekend. I'm just an XJ with a stick addict and the SO loves her TJ with a stick. Getting to where we need to go through them from end to end as they are our daily drivers.

    Yeah I miss the 5 I have sold, but I have 3 to restore so the pain is not to great. Heck I even miss my Samurai which will hit the shop ahead of the Jeeps. Next Jeep restore will be a 57 CJ5 with half cab into a service station service truck. They were a bare bones work vehicle of their time. My Grand Cherokee was a lot more comfortable, warmer and full of amenities, but from a different era. Of course I think a 1940 Packard convertible is one of the coolest cars there is, but a modern Kia handles a lot better. Again different machines of different times. The Jeeps I've had worked well for me, but I used them within their limitations and did not go wild. If you don't like Jeeps that's your thing. Personally I have always liked them and IH's offerings. They blazed many of the trails used today. As for heaters, there were a lot of vehicles back in those days that didn't heat well, in fact I yanked the one out of my Samurai and will install and after market one in it.

    I think I'll probably plate it this summer and drive it around topless/doorless. It's currently in storage about 15 minutes from where I live.

    I'm considering selling it too, but I don't know if I could go through with it. It was my first vehicle and my dad, brother, and I fixed it up together.

    I will no longer miss my CJ as much during the winter! No, I'm not driving it, but I did buy it's 'modern' descendent to drive!

    Traded in the XJ on a '00 TJ today!



    Only 56K miles, and it hasn't seen a winter yet. But it will now!

    Will I miss the XJ? Probably a little. I've had 4 of them, and this was by far the best built/most capable one.

    However, I love the way you sit higher in a CJ/YJ/TJ, so I don't think I'll miss it. Much.

    I love my XJ. It squeaks, rattles and drives like a...well Jeep, but I couldn't sell it. I have had newer, better, faster, fancier vehicles, but this is my fav. Don't even know why, it just is? I can really see the appeal of the new Wranglers, especially with the new engine and trans combo...if I had the scratch, I would be driving one now.

    Of course the XJ would become the weekend warrior!!



    I have never owned a Land Cruiser old or new... but drove an FJ40 my roomie owned years ago. That thing was a beast...and I loved it!

    I have to say, as much as it pains me, there is no comparison. I doubt that I'll ever buy another Jeep (the only thing that might sway me would be a diesel in a new wrangler).

    I just bought a 97 FZJ80 a couple weeks ago which is the first non Jeep 4x4 I have owned. I have owned a 82 Cherokee, 87 Wrangler, 04 Rubicon, 05 Rubicon, and 05 Liberty CRD. I still have the CRD because of the diesel. Can't see myself giving that one up. I do miss the 05 Rubicon which had 6"lift on 35's, although my CRD with 2.5" lift on 31's gets me to most places I need to go on half the fuel cost. I found that I was more of the expedition type outdoorsman rather than the rock crawler type.
    I plan on putting a diesel in the LC soon. This will keep my fleet diesel fuel only. My DD is a VW TDI. Love the diesels!

    I've owned several XJ's and aside from the 4.0L power versus my 22re I miss NOTHING about Jeeps... Anyone who "misses their jeep" just hasn't found the right Toyota yet. There is a Toyota that fits the bill of ANY Jeep ever made and alot that Jeep can't match. Want to go topless wheeling??? Get a 40 or a 1st Gen 4Runner. The Runner will climb things NO SWB jeep has ever been able to and the 40 is so much heavier duty then any earlier Jeep it's a joke....Want a solid-axled wagon??? Lots of those to choose from that make the XJ/ZJ/WK pointless. THe rattling interiors of my XJ were nearly enought to make me get out and walk. And they've only JUST figured out to put decent sized axles under neath the things (yeah they may have solid axles, but when they're weaker then say the IFS center section of my '89 it's a bit of a moot point. Then they go and put an Aluminum center sectioned axle under a V8 powered Wagon with traction aided diffs??? WTF???)

    My Offroad life started out Toyota, which was an 85 straight axle pick up after high school and a rust bucket 77 FJ40 soon after. But after having kids at a very young age put the offroading on the backburner for a few years as I couldn't affort jack... But when I finally was able to get around to it, the JEEP XJ was making its way into the offroad world and market. This wasn't the FJ60/62 that I wanted but something I could put the kids in and actually afford at the time. Mods were decently priced due to the large number of vendors that kept the mod market affordable (unlike the Toy LC stuff...) and junkyards had tons of Jeep XJ parts (Dana 44 rear axles, 8.25s, ZJ disc brakes, elec fans, etc..) which made it even more affordable. The 4.0HO is a stout motor and very reliable. And I did get to wheel the piss out of it... But over a period of time it started to get too small for my family and it started to $0.05 & $0.10 me to death... all it took was one item to break and then it was a like a weekly domino effect of parts needing to be replaced. Not to mention it squeeked, rattled and moaned when I drove it down the street, and everytime I'd get around to vacuum it out, I'd find another dashboard screw or something that would vibrate and fall out. So I would practically wrench to keep it running every weekend and my wife was getting pretty tired of it..

    I sold it and bought a mildly lifted FZJ80, and I really just drive it and change the oil in it.... nuff said...
