    Default D1 5 speed swap

    Okay boys as stated in my other thread my auto may have **** the bed.

    On a scale of 1-10 how are is it to swap in a 5 speed for those that have done it,1 being easy.

    Just looking some real world knowledge here,i know they are hard to find as well.

    I would (and more or less have) do as suggested; find a 5 speed to purchase and swap parts over. When the 4.6 in my 98 let go it was more cost effective to get the 96 5 speed I have now and swap parts. It also let me go back and build a bit more nuanced for how I wanted the vehicle to be (vice what the old one had become).

    wow lots of great info from you guys lol. What no one has swapped out an auto for the 5 speed? Yeah buy another truck you say,don't want to spend another 1500-2k to get one. And plus they are hard enough to find. I already have the merc diesel swapped in and everything ready to go. It would take to much time and effort to move it all to another truck.
    I'll just rebuild the auto if it comes down to that.

    They are not giving you bad advice.
    I looked very hard at going the other direction (from 5 speed to auto) because of a knee problem. It's all bolt on pieces but you'd be better to find a 5 speed truck and use everything off that truck.

    thought your post #3 says you already near about have a second truck. And yes, I have done several- auto petrol to 5 spd diesel actually(see site), and only do them utilizing a donor truck. While primarily this allows me to thoroughly test the motor and drivetrain, it also provides invaluable supply of all the little bits needed that run the price sky high. Lastly, it makes the swap indistinguishable from a factory setup. In your case you will also need console, pedal boxes, shifter, etc.

    Thanks for the info guys, i don't have a donor truck of any sorts. But I may be able to find a used auto alot easier so that might be the better way to go.
    Its really hard to find a D1 with a 5sp around here where I live.

    Do you guys have any idea how rare Disco 1 5 speeds are in Canada??? Not exactly a low cost suggestion...to buy a rare vehicle and use it for parts...

    The cheapest method would be to get someone to ship all the needed used parts from the UK. It would not cost very much.

    Red90 do have a good site in might to source said parts? Just want to get a ball park figure of what it would cost.
