100 Series Land Cruiser Limb Risers on ARB Sahara Bar

Hello all.

I could use some advice on building a set of limb risers. Our travels to Guatemala have us on some pretty serious jungle trails, and limb risers have been recommended. I have one of the ARB Sahara style bumpers that don't offer the bar work around the headlamps. I thought of using a couple heavy duty CB antenna mounts clear forward on the inner fender wall, but am concerned about tear out and more damage than they are worth. There are a couple holes in the flat part of the bumper in front of the headlamps that I believe are for antennas or such. I thought of using those as a mounting point for a vertical bar to raise high enought to clear the hood. The concern is that any significant force would fold those into the hood as well.

Any suggestions out there?

I think your best bet is swapping your Sahara for a Combination bar. Welding an anchor tube on top of your Sahara might be sufficient but it won't be as sturdy as the bar work on the combination.

I would agree that the combination bar is best suited for this. Hands down the best option. I am partial to the Sahara though. It has done me well in every other aspect. Time and money limit me from making that jump. I head north for Christmas in Montana, then in SLC for a day, then south. So I realistically have a couple days to make this happen. I have a couple ideas, so we will see what I can come up with.

Do you mind drilling/? You just simply need to bring the lower vertex to the edge and up, right? I think any extended mount would be (totally guessing from my desk here) at least 12" up?

Some more guesses, the wire elevates at let's say 40º, and let's also say (no idea on this) 15lbs of tension, which at the 12" extension would put a moment on the extension base at 12 lbs-ft. Doesn't sound like too much, but deflect that wire with a few limbs and you will see that moment increase maybe even by an order of magnitude. I think you may need to over-engineer that base to assume at least a 100 lbs-ft moment, a 1/2" diameter pipe puts lots of stress on said base and bar.

Correct my angle and tension assumptions if you like, but I think you may need to at least use a large diameter base for any vertical extension.

Good find Ckkone, I actually had limb risers using very similar mounts before I had the ARB. May need to reconsider putting them again before my trip to yosemite

Thanks for the input. Great ideas. The antenna mounts were the initial plan. Here is what I came up with. The masts utlize an existing hole in the bumper, and the horizontal brace utilizes an existing hole at the intersection of the front apron and the interior fender wall.

The mast is 5/8" threaded rod, with 5/8" ID steel tubing sleeve. Large Fender washers top and bottom, secured in place with nuts and lock washers. I fabricated a couple tabs to hook onto out of the same 12 steel the braces are made of. It rises just above the hood and hooks to the rack with eyelets. Stainless hardware and galvanized cable. It does have the homemade look, that's for sure. But it is really stout. I planned on putting two braces per mast, but after trying one, I left it alone.

I will remove the antennas to improve the lines. They are not out as far as the commercial bar lines. We'll see.
