I haven't done this myself, but the local hardware stores usually stock 1/8" or 3/16" stainless steel cable and they can cut to length and crimp loops on the ends for you. Should be an inexpensive weatherproof solution.

Per online recommendations, having spring loading is better to take the shock. I added porch swing springs available at home depot/lowes in line with my turnbuckle.

agree 100%, i looked at drawback springs from macmaster carr but closed ends rather thent he open ended porch swings. have not purchased them yet as i'm still debating spring rates. without the spring when traveling at speed you risk pulling the rack off your roof. to keep this from happening i use a 3/8" eyelet at the top that has a sheering point much lower than it will take to rip the rack off my roof. i have popped one side twice and the other side once. if i go slow enough they work great but anyting over 10mph and thicker than 2" and it will snap.

Here are close up pics of my springs. All hardware can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot.

Anyone know of a way to attach these without a front bull bar. My bumper has an A-bar. I never thought I needed them until I was driving through brush at my friends farm. When I was done my wind shield wipers were perpendicular to each other!
