    Default Colombia - South America 2004, 07 & 08

I have taken some trips to Colombia so thought I might share these with people. My main motivation here is to show people who might think Colombia is not a good place to visit that you shouldn't believe the hype!

*EDIT* The title of the thread is wrong, I took these trips in 2004, 08 & 09. I get confused sometimes because I travel at the end of one year and start of another!

I have been into Nissan Patrols for a long time. More then 20yrs, ever since I bought my first one as a young lad. In about 2002 I started talking to a guy online who lived in Colombia, I was on a Nissan Patrol forum and asking about parts. The guy who messaged me was telling me there was not only all kinds of parts for the old Patrols in Colombia but tons of trucks too. He and I became pretty good friends online. He invited me down to Colombia in late 2003.

I had never been to Colombia and at the time had not been traveling much outside the USA. I also at this time knew very little about Colombia. Instead of reading up or listening to a bunch of crap on the internet I just decided to go and find out for myself what Colombia was all about. I bought a plane ticket and a plan was in motion. What motivated me to take this trip was Nissan Patrols. My buddy down there is an avid Patrol owner and also a member in the largest 4wd Club in Colombia. So I knew my trip was going to be about trucks! I was a bit unsure what to expect, not only about Colombia but also because I really had not met many people online at this time and than met them in real life. However, I was going!

I am not going to get into exact names of places or details on history or any of this kind of thing. I am going to let the pictures do most of the talking in this trip report and just add some comments here and there. Think of it as being a spoiler for a new movie! If I get into all the details, history of the country or this or that place and add my opinions it will mumbo jumbo this up. I would rather, if this thread inspired you to travel to Colombia that you experience it for yourself, less any opinion, hype or whatever you want to call it. So on with the trip(s)!

My buddy picked me up at the airport in Bogota and thus began a solid long lasting friendship!

I quickly learned Colombia is not what I was expecting. While I didn't buy into the hype before I left I still could not avoid it. Everybody kept saying to me before I left, why do you want to go there!? Cocaine, murder & kidnapping...be careful! I heard a lot of that kind of thing before I left. I thought I was going to see mostly violence and poverty in Colombia. That was not the case at all. Also, I had no idea what to expect from the people of Colombia. I was quickly shown they are some of the nicest, most down to earth people anywhere I have been!

My buddy (Hector) had made arrangements to take me around Bogota a lot and show me everything from rare Patrols to new and used parts. I also went around to dealerships and test drove the Patrol and checked out the TLC's. On my first or second weekend there I got the chance to go out with the 4wd Club, Doble & Bajo, for a day of off-roading. This was an awesome day and I certainly enjoyed myself!

The day was fairly uneventful with no breakages or mishaps. That was until we were coming out of the mountains....

This member of the club ended up rolling his truck as we came out of the mountains. It happened right in front of me! Luckily nobody was seriously hurt but the Hilux was trashed. It was still fairly early in the day and another trail was planned but this ended the trip.

The next weekend Hector and myself went to Santa Marta to hang out with his brother.

It turned out Hector's brother was also into Patrols and had a super sweet one he was wanting to sell. It is a very rare model, the LG61, and was in decent condition. His price was $3,000 so I bought it!!

Sadly, I never got around to importing the truck into the USA. I won't get into why in this write up but it still bums me out to this day! I ended up selling the truck in Colombia a few years later.

While on this trip to Colombia I learned this country is a wet dream for anybody into Patrols, especially old Patrols!! Everywhere I went there they were....hows this for a mall crawler!?

The red Patrol was one of many Hector has owned, at the time this was his toy. The Rover was owned by a guy who owned/ran a Rover specialty shop in Bogota. As soon as I pulled out my camera they had to try to flex the trucks up for a picture!

And I saw many other cool trucks while I was there.....

    FJ43's are everywhere down there...

This is what remained of a very rare Patrol, a 1959 4W66. This is not exactly what they looked like back in 1959!

Here is another picture of Hector's toy at the time, a 1980 LG61 Patrol with a SOA lift.

    A Russian Gaz with a Chevy v8....

I found in the used parts market of Bogota this super rare Nissan rear PTO box that came off an old fire truck....

I spent my last 10 days or so in the country just doing things in Bogota....

On one of my last nights in Bogota we headed out to the race truck to watch some locals drag race their vehicles, it was fun!

And as is usual with a trip it came to an end to soon. However, I had fallen for the country and knew I would be back, especially because I had made a very good friend there! To be continued.....

So in early 2008 I was able to return to Colombia. This time I planned to stay in the country for over four weeks.

Hector not only loves Patrols he also loves muscle cars....

In particular he likes the early 70s Dodge Demons. We screamed around Bogota a lot in this car and it is times I won't soon forget!

I also love muscle cars so it didn't really matter what he & I talked about, we hit it off!

One day while in Bogota we went to a classic car show....

On one of my first weekends here I was able to attend a 4wd competition, Colombia style!!

    It is a Jeep thing...

    A Colombian buggy.....

I spent more time around Bogota and the surrounding areas....and of course saw lot's more cool trucks!

This is a 1980s 160-series or MQ/MK (Aussie term) Patrol pick up. In Colombia this is known as the Nissan "Samurai"

At this time in 2008 Hector had bought himself a 2005 Patrol. I got to drive it a bunch and man was it sweet!!

This was another of Hector's previous Patrols. A mid-1990s GQ or Y60. This is my other buddy Helmut who bought the truck off Hector.

Now since I had up to this point spent so much time around Bogota and focused a lot on trucks I felt it was time to get out an explore a bit more....

So I headed for Villa de Leyva for a few days, Along the way visiting a Cathedral that is inside a salt mine.

and the miners who died here....

And passing by many coffee fields on the way....

I hung out in Villa de Leyva a few days and visited the fossil museum while I was there.

My chill out pad in Villa de Leyva for a few days while I was there, it was on top of a mountain overlooking the village and surrounding areas!

    and the view at sunrise....

The extremely charming and relaxing plaza in Villa de Leyva. A great place to chill out, drink a beer and watch the afternoon roll by!

The fossil museum in Villa de Leyva

I couldn't resist this piece of dino poo that was for sale...since this trip it has resided on my coffee table in my living room!

I then went back to Bogota and caught a plane out to Cartagena on the coast. I spent 5 days or so in Cartagena enjoying myself to the fullest!

    More Patrols!!!

Cartagena is such a wonderful city...

I even went up to the old Spanish Monastery....

all bow before the mighty golden goat!!

Before I headed back to Bogota I decided a few days out to the Rosario Islands off the coast were in order....

The boat name to the islands....

    River transportation....

A sail boat that got blown into the reef....

I am not a fan of zoos or marine parks or any of that kind of stuff but while out here I felt I should give it at least a quick look.

These are from around the islands....

    An abandon hotel....

    more abandon buildings out here....

    and some not so abandon....

    Friggin' paradise!!

Lots of cold beers in the hot sun makes me act a bit goofy!

hard to beat this for lunch.....

As with all good things, eventually it comes to an end. So I headed back to Bogota....

Now Hector had got himself a new project since I was down here in 2004. This one being a late 1970s Nissan Patrol. He put Y60 axles under it and did the suspension up as SOA. He also mated a Y60 5spd tranny and t-case to the stock engine using a home made adapter plate.

Unfortunately this truck was not finished before it was time for me to leave Colombia. So during this trip I never got to ride in it....

This pretty much concludes my 2008 trip to Colombia. All the parts I want to share anyways!!!

I returned to Colombia again in early 2009. This time for nearly another month. Since I had now been here a few times, felt comfortable in the country and just loved it I had convinced a friend of mine to join me. He hesitated but it didn't take much convincing to get him to go! He stayed in Colombia for a few weeks, I stayed on after he left for a few weeks longer.

We started off by checking things out around Bogota....

Bummer but only a week or so after I was leaving this band I listen to was playing in Bogota....

So me and my buddy decided to head on out to Cartagena for a week. Time spent sight seeing, relaxing, beer drinking, snorkeling and so on.

One of the cool things about Cartagena is that the old Spanish fort and walls are made up from a lot of coral.

I love old Spanish cities like this....Antigua & Granada just to name a few.

I don't do it often when I travel but once in awhile you just have to! Take your pick...

    He likes this one!

Take a guess...how many old school Patrols do you think are in this picture? *Hint* they are used as taxis in Cartagena so it is a lot.

I had heard about The mud volcano of Totumo near Cartagena but didn't make it last time. So it was on our "must do" list for this trip...

It proved to be a good way to get rid of a hangover!
