One argument against them is the roofs on vehicles are pretty thin. So it's possible with big antennas, low branches to rip an NMO out or at least distort the sheet metal.

I made these big disks to spread the load. Also I had to make the metal slightly thicker to prevent the NMO from squeezing too much and being proud of the surface. This prevented one antenna, the STI-CO Flexiwhip, from compressing the gasket fully. The metal on the roof of my Toyota was thinner than Larsen expected it would seem.

These disks are just cut from super thin scrap I had. Also gave me the opportunity to rough the paint under the roof and silver epoxy them on, which I think helped the NMO conductivity to the roof.
