Ford F150 and Chevy 4x4 in the Same Family

I've been poking around on here for several months now, but haven't formally introduced myself. I'm BigTex, I live outside of Dallas, Texas with my Wife and two kids. Daughter 5, and Son 3 mos. I have a 2002 F150 Supercrew for a daily driver, that I'd like to set up for a camping/backwoods/fireroad rig. With my wife and 2 small kids, the 4 doors come in really handy. It'll never be a SAS'd rockcrawler, just a good all around family camping truck. I bought it from a kid that couldn't afford the payments anymore, and Daddy was making him sell it instead of bailing him out again. It's probably seen every mud hole in E. Texas based on some parts I've had to replace that shouldn't have been worn out yet in my opionion. It had 124K on it when I bout it, and it just turned over 170K. It was filthy dirty, needed a rear passenger door due to his GF putting it into a car port pole, and a tailgate, due to him backing into a trunk mounted bike rack on another vehicle. I got it for about $3k less than they were selling for at the time, had it detailed, found a white tailgate at the wrecking yard, and had my body shop buddy do the door skin. I sold the blazer in my avatar, and was able to pay cash for it, and it doesn't owe me a thing.

Here it is as it currently sits: The torsion bars are cranked, it has a quiet Flowmaster muffler that the PO put on, and is currently sitting on 285/70/17 Treadwrights. And although it's ExPo taboo, I actually added the chrome step bars. Remember it's a family rig. This was my deciding factor on installing them, other than they were a cheap CL find.

ExPo = No step bars, Pregnant and Short Wife = Step bars.

I built this little light bar (although there aren't any lights on it yet, so the wife asked if I can still call it a light bar) mainly to work on my fab skills. I have a little mig, and wanted to try my hand at bending/fitting/welding pipe for future mods i'd like to do to this truck and the Chevy. Aaahhh, the Chevy.......

I'd like to build a custom slide in truck camper like mexitripper did:

Ok, so here's my "little red truck". It's history through present:

Dad bought this when I was in high school from a buddy of his to use to do construction/home remodeling/fence jobs on the side. It's an '83 model. It was a 6.2L diesel short bed. Looked great, got 20mpg, and was a great 3rd vehicle. Fast forward to 2001 or 2002. I had spent every Saturday for a year helping my Dad build their house. One day he asks me what he owes me for all the help, and by now the '83 had been sitting, becuase he had a '98 dodge he was driving everyday. I ask him what he's gonna do with the little red truck. He says he doesn't know, he hates to sell it, but doesn't need it anymore. Why do you want it? Uhh, yeah! So he gave it to me for payment. Now for it's dark period. It was a c10, not a K10, I was younger, and dumber, and always wanted a hot rod, so out comes the diesel, in goes a 350 that rocked the whole truck every time the cam hit, and it was lowered 5" front and rear. It stayed in this configuration until about 2009, when I saw this truck:

I came home, told my wife that I was selling the 2wd and am gonna buy a 4x4. She threw years of me telling her that I'd never sell that truck becuase Dad gave it to me in my face, and said, if you want a 4 wheel drive, why don't you just make that one 4 wheel drive! Hmmmmmm.....the wheels started to turn, a few internet searches later about this sort of thing, and the process began! It's been a slow go, and she just gave birth to our second kid, ( a son this time) in November. So hopefully one day, it'll look like this, or maybe Dirty Larry's rig!

WHAT!? That is like cats and dogs sleeping together! It would be acceptable to have a Dodge in the family but the bottom feeder of the US automotive industry truck (Ford) in the same household??? Geeze…. Just Kidding! Actually, I have a cousin that has a SuperCrew like yours but black. It is a pretty nice truck.

You made be blush with your comment towards my rig though. Glad it is a benchmark for someone. That is a nice looking little square body you got there. Not sure I would mess with it doing a 4x4 conversion though. Square 4x4 trucks are dime a dozen where you could start with a fresh canvas that you won’t be scared to dent or scratch. Your red ’83 looks too clean to turn into 4x4 duty.

I like that light bar, very cool and simple. I really like the red Chevy as it sits and I wouldn't change it one bit. I understand the sentimental value as I have an '83 F-250 that my grandfather bought new, and gave to me a few years back. I sold it a year later, then bought it back 2 years ago and won't ever sell it again. That red Chevy remind me of my first vehicle, and '85 Chevy C10 Short Step that was pretty lame and within a few months was sitting super low, riding on Chrome Cragars, and had a built stroker small block. I dream of one day finding a short wide like yours and putting a fuel injected 6.0 LS in. The stance on your truck is perfection, I hope you don't mind that I saved that photo to my computer. :smiley_drive:

txflyyaker- that's a great name for it!

Thanks for the kind words, and I agree it would've been easier (and cheaper) to just find another truck, but when this one's done it'll be what I want it to be, and it'll be the one my Dad gave me, so I don't mind the extra work.

I'm gonna do a build thread on it eventually, maybe on another site, becuase I don't know how "ExPo" it'll be when complete. I thought I'd post up some pics of where it is now, and how it got there. I'm currently swaping out the trans tunnel. (Something i wouldn't have had to do, if I'd started with a 4x4). Hey, I just thought of something, maybe I can blame my parents for not buying a 4x4 in the 1st place! That seems to be socially acceptable these days. It's not my fault I'm having to do this!! Ha, ha, ha.

2x4 Frame leaving, H*ll of a body lift!

Trans tunnel ready for swap, i've since learned this is the hard way to make room for a T-case. I should've used the older model bolt in trans hump.

ExPo Family, it's been a while since I've updated this thread. I've meant to, but life happens. Let me get you guys up to date...

Here's a current picture of the "red truck" above. It's been quite the project. The build thread for it is over on 67-72 Chevy Trucks.

So I sold the F150 Supercrew, and bought a 2005 Z71 suburban. I've posted it up in the Suburban thread, but if you missed it, here it is. It was a one owner, complete with 20X8 soccer mom rims. I ditched those in favor of some 17X9s and 285s. I installed ford torsion keys, and a 2" ebay spacer in the back. It rode great and I loved it.
enhance

Then we decided to move. Here it is flat towing the "red truck" to it's new home.

And then after snow in North Texas...

So at this point, it's just Chevy and Chevy in the same family, no fords. To be continued...

Then we decided we should get a camper. That's fun right? How about a big one with a nice living room, that would be cool. Oh yeah, we need a bumper pull because we have a suburban. So a fifth wheel is out. This was purchased.

enhance

So the suburban HATED this thing. 3.42's + 285's + hills + 7600lb camper = 45 mph at the top of a grade with the pedal on the floor. I knew we couldn't sustain this for long, the trans was going to grenade.

I'd had my eye on an F350 that I'd spotted sitting in a field. After the first trip with the camper in the suburban, my wife was finally on board with getting a better/bigger tow vehicle. Problem was, not wanting to spend a lot. No problem honey, I've already found a good tow vehicle. I'll go buy it, and you let me know what you think...

This is all I could see of it from the road. Long story short, $600 later I towed it home. Ford to Chevy ratio back in balance...

It needed an oil cooler rebuild, batteries, and a lot of TLC. I did the oil cooler and the batteries. It fired right up but had a mis. I'm not a diesel mechanic, and was kind of afraid it may turn into a money pit. It had 340K on it, and the interior was destroyed. I cleaned it up and sold it for $3200.

With the profit, I built a pergola and we bought patio furniture. Buuutttt, we still had a heavy camper.

While digging around on our favorite web site, other than ExPo of course, I ran across this 2005 GMC 2500HD. This will pull the camper. It's gas, 6.0L, 4.11s, auto, leather, came with the camper top, etc. To be honest, sitting in it felt just like the suburban except for a white hood in front of you instead of a black one. Bye Bye Burban...

enhance

First of many fuel stops when you have a 6.0L gas truck...

I drove it like this for about a year. Pulled the camper top off, and stored it. I like it, but don't want it on all the time. I'm really wanting to take the kids camping with it.

Pulled the camper, found a set of 16X8's at a swap meet. I was researching leveling kits, and the inner webs revealed that 1/2 ton GM keys work as a poor mans leveling kit in the 2500 series trucks. So, I swapped in my 1/2 ton torsion keys that were left over from putting the ford keys in the suburban. Stuck some 285's on it. I really like the way it looks now. The only thing I may do to it is add a small block to the rear. I prefer a little rake, so it's level when a trailer is hooked up, or has a load in the bed.

So this brings you up to date. I'll try to keep this a little more current, and not update it every 5 years if it needs it or not. Oh yeah, the Ford/Chevy ratio is off again...

Nice rig. I don't see how anyone who lives in TX could own a black vehicle. I wouldn't own one here in CO and we have cold weather for half of the year! :ylsmoke:
.
I'm a little surprised the Z71 'Burb had 3.42's. My LT has 3.73, and seems to do a great job pulling our little trailer over 10,000' passes.
