HI, I`m new to the forum and need help picking out the best Backspacing for my setup.

1997 XJ RE 3.5 super ride, OME long travel shocks,Soon to be 16X8 wheels with 255/85R 16.

Still have stock axles, front dana 30 rear chrysler 8.25 & stock fenders, don`t know how much the fenders will have to be chopped yet... Not sure how much backspacing I should use. 5, 4.5 4 ???

4" would do the trick. Lower the number the further the wheel sticks out.
I run 3.75" BS and no flares, but uncut fenders, on 31's and they stick out about 1-1.5" each side, stock flares would cover them up about 90% if you can visualize it.

4.5" will tuck with minimal trimming as long as you bump stop appropriately. I run 35"s with these wheels and 5.5" lift with the factory flares minimally trimmed. I went from 3.75" bs to these and it handles much better both on the highway and trail. 5" might work well as well if not better with your narrow 33s.

Thanks for the info, Looks like I`m going with Toyo MT @ LT265/75R16 123P E/10, About as large as I can go without swapping gears.

I`m still kinda stuck on the 255/85R 16 tires for later down the road but not sure how they do wheeling in the back country, Rocks, hills, river crossings, technical trails.

Any videos with these tires would help.

My only reservation to narrower ~11" is deep snow performance as floatation is key. Otherwise a narrow tire like that would be great for me. There are a lot of threads and info supporting pizza cutters here. With a 265/75 I would say the 5" wheels would be perfect but if you plan to step up to 255/85s I would lean toward the 4.5" as they will work with up to a 315/75(35"). I agree with your regearing statement and in all honesty a 3" lift with 265s(32") is a perfect setup to do most anything.

For a long time, I ran 32x11.50 on stock 15x7 w/ RE 4.5". It was very close. However, the only thing it really needed was a steering-stop adjustment. That tire is a little wide for my tastes nowadays, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
