On way to Walmart one day with wife NOT looking to buy a new car, or an old one for that matter. Next door in Home Depot parking lot saw this Montero for sale...sign said $1,800. Called the number and bought on spot pretty much. All original, nothing had been replaced or swapped on this vehicle. 159k original miles, automatic V6 3.0, electric windows and locks, A/C and EVERYTHING WORKED. It had a miss in it, turned out the fuel injection wiring harness was corroded. Found replacement one in junkyard for FREE! Runs like a top now.
1st thing I did was get rid of old wheels and tires, purchased ULTRA GAUNTLET wheels and threw on some NITTO TERRA GRAPPLERS.
Next I replaced the interior carpeting and re-upholstered the seats in leather and added heated front seat elements. Works like a charm. I have posted some before and after pics! (I say that assuming I will figure out how to post the pics!)
It has some rust around rear wheel wells and windshield frame. Recently it began letting rain in around top of windshield and it was running down the front pillars. So...into the body shop to get all rust removed and new paint on it...that just went in today 3/6/12. I will post pics as the progress happens.
I just ordered a snorkel, one could not be found in the states and had to come from ARB Australia...go figure.
I also had specially cut diamond plate to cover the rockers and, ready for this twist???? I am adding diamond plate to the right and left side of the hood much like you would see on a Land Rover Defender and I also ordered a shovel and pick axe mount kit to mount them to the hood much like a Defender. Axe, Shovel and Shovel mount kit arrived from Rover North but Axe mount kit is on back order.
I want to give this a full on Safari/Expedition look.
Monty is all white now, would love to paint it that Jeep NATO Brown/Sand color, but way too much time/money/effort to make it worth the while...sooooo, it will be repainted white BUT...the ROOF will be a flat black and the HOOD will be a flat black.
$1800 purchase + $3200 interior up grades + $4500 exterior work + $1,000 mechanical + $1,000 transmission work = $11,500 so far and not done. $4500 exterior hasnt been paid yet as they just begun and could go higher! OUCH
I will not pretend to be a gear head, as I am not...so with that said, I am looking to retool the suspension and anything else on the under belly of the beast. Recommendations and advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Also have ordered a couple different types of fender flares to see what will work best...anyone have thoughts on that as well? Gonna see how the Bushwacker flares for a Jeep Cherokee work. I ordered and got in all weather floor mats for the front, back and crago area...nice. Removed (and kept) original stereo and speakers and added a JVC double din and infinity speakers, will add a sub and an amp next.

Very, very nicely done, mate. Don't sell yourself short. If you spot an old Mitsubishi in a parking lot, buy it same-day, and then proceed to kit it out, you are a gearhead in all the right reasons. Kudos!

First off, good find! Secondly, I can't wait to see how the diamond plate looks on the hood. Are you going to have the diamond plate coated w/ flat black or bedliner or leave brite?
You can't go wrong w/ OME or you could also go w/ Ironman. I went w/ OME coils, torsion bars, & Nitro charger shocks on my 89 & it performs very well. There are also other alternatives if you don't want to drop the $$$ for OME or Ironman.
No matter what you have a great start!
Cheers!

Black roof? Isn't it hot in KC in the summer time?
I like the re-upholstery job. How much was it if you don't mind me asking? Been thinking about doing mine too and adding the heated seat setup also. It's not super cold in CA but it is at the ski resorts.

Looks awesome so far, great job on the interior!
I agree with fatrat, the OME suspension is pretty sweet, I've had mine in now for nearly 2 months and I love it. Granted its a little different between your year and my 95, but still, they make quality stuff. I ended up paying around $550 for rear springs, front and rear shocks, not cheap, but not terribly expensive either, and it's mild enough that you shouldn't have to make any other mods due to the suspension change (correct me if I'm wrong guys, at least that was the case with my SR).
Still, seems that you're on the right path. Keep us updated, you might want to start a build thread with all that you're doing just to keep it organized.
