    Talking Catching up on maintenance

It's been a very busy 6 months due to work commitments, visitors from abroad and a bit of fun time in between. The cruiser has been performing very well and has done everything asked of it. Towing with this vehicle is a dream by comparison to the 1HZ 80 however, I miss the robust feel of the 80. If it's very difficult terrain I'd feel more comfortable in the 80 that being said, the 100 is no slouch. If fact it's may drawback is the extra size. Still very happy with the decision.

So it was time for some maintenance, one item I had not addressed yet was to check the valve clearances on this 24 valve diesel.

Photo of the intake removed on the table:

Photo of the top of the engine with valve covers removed, a bit intimidating at first but with a Toyota factory manual and lots of reading on some aussie forums, it worked out:

    I'm now set for another 10 000 Km's!

I had been waiting for this little gem to show up thanks to a group buy on LCOOL.org, any guesses as to what it is?

    Cheers,
    P

Good idea. I'll be inspecting these after our Cape York trip and may consider having them serviced at that point.

    Bingo!

One of the forum members on LCOOL.org here in Victoria Australia used to work for Safari Power and was the brains behind the development of these intercoolers. He no longer works for Safari Power but still holds strong ties with the company. He regularly organises group buys for some of the Safari gear including their snorkels, intercoolers and exhaust systems. Out of interest, Safari Power used to manufacture what they called High Output packages for the HDJ100R vehicles, the kit included the following:

    • Dtronic performance chip - still considered to be the best module on the market. Sadly they are no longer producing new ones that being said they still have stock to support customers with existing units.
    • Larger intercooler
    • 3" performance exhaust

This cruiser came with a Steinbauer chip and 3" exhaust. It was only missing the larger intercooler...

Here is a photo of the OEM vs Safari aftermarket unit:

Fitted to the vehicle, it was a very very tight fit:

The last piece of the performance improvement process will be to spend some time on a four wheel dyno to fine tune things.

    Final update for today...

I wanted a solid mounting location for the sand flag and I don't like them on the bull bar (personal choice) so I came up with this little idea. The rear wheel carrier comes drilled and tapped for mounting accessories such as HF antennas, camp light mounts, shovel or jack holders so I took advantage of that design feature to add this:

Smile Manar Park - Proston Queensland Australia

What do you do when you need a bit of a 4WD fix? Well you head out to a local off road park to test out your new vehicle. With that in mind, we left on a Thursday morning and pointed the cruiser with trailer in tow due south for a bit of 4WD fun. We met up with 6 other friends from Brisbane at a place called Manar Park near Proston QLD Australia.

I put the cruiser up on some rocks for the first time. Performed well.

A nice line up of cruisers right back to the early models. Both the 40 and 80 in this photo are serious off road weapons. I really enjoyed following them except for the really tight tracks...

But no adventure is complete without a bit of bush mechanics. On the way home I picked up a piece of metal in the rear left side tyre (yes tyre in Oz, not tire ).

Can you spot the offending piece?

Fortunately I had a proper repair kit in the Landcruiser. The piece of metal is lying on the case.

Who said you can't have fun when you are fixing things?

All fixed and time for some more air for the trip home.

Note: I've had the tyre properly repaired given it was brand new.

    Cheers,
    P

A bit out of sequence given the updates to the cruiser but I'll start with some fun stuff.

Can anyone guess where this photos was taken?

    Hint in second photo...

    I love your new turbo-diesel 100!

Black would be my last choice due to heat and appearance (dirty, scratches) but I agree with you Pierre, the mechanicals come first.

Sorry I missed this thread until today, but happy to catch up and follow along.

Are any of these nice Aussie toys traveling back to North America with you when you return?

Yes Black was a compromise however the drivetrain was spot on and the aftermarket accessories were tasteful so it got the nod. As for returning to NA that will all depend on return date...
