Thread-serts/rivet nuts..Help

I see there is a visual difference in the two but what is the griping difference? Im looking for 5/16-18 inserts. From what I have found thread serts in this size can be installed with a pop rivet type tool and the rivet nuts in that size sound like u need the larger two handle tool. Are the rivet nut harder to crimp than the thread serts? I've been doing some looking on line but only got more confused. Where is a a good place to buy the tool and the inserts? I have never used them before, so any and all info would be very helpful.

If you're using a threaded insert, you can make your own tool. I sell threaded inserts with one of the kits that I make for Jeeps. Here's a link to a video, that shows how to install the threaded inserts.
