1964 Nissan Patrol soft top restoration

The drivetrain has been painted to a stock early color, only found on Patrols up to 1965. I had several stock items in this color and we simply cleaned the pieces up and started painting samples on them until a match was found.

Bell housing was painted inside and out, a low mile flywheel in great shape was machined and a whole new NOS clutch installed. It also has NOS engine and trans mounts. The red bolts are temporary, just about time to start having some fun putting this thing all together!

Making progress....

Keeping with the early year of this Patrol and doing our best to keep it stock for this year. Nissan made a lot of changes over the years to the 60-series Patrol. Having a plethora of used~spare parts means going through it all, cleaning up the best parts and trying to use things that are specific to the early year. One change made was the vent for the top of the engine went from being simply vented through the early style oil filler cap to being vented via the valve cover and into the oil bath air filter housing. We are using the early style oil filler cap, valve cover and a very rare item, an early style oil bath that doesn't have the breather tube built into it.

Exhaust manifold, this took a lot of work to get clean but it is now ready for paint. I am replacing the studs on the bottom from manifold to exhaust flange.

More goodies, the brass bit is a Radiator petcock drain, and it is 50yrs old!

Thermostat housings, early and late style, early is in the foreground and the main difference is that it is all around more beefy with more meat or material present.

Oil filter bases and canisters, early and later style, early is on the right. A number of differences with these which I won't get into right now but the differences may decide which one gets used.

I have been working pretty steadily on this truck for the last month or so. I actually spent my 2013 New Years Eve working on this truck! :) Not logging a ton of hours but logging hours nearly every day. All kinds of things needed to be done to proceed with assembly.

Had a handful of items left to de-grease, sand blast and prep for paint, then let the body guy paint this stuff. Had to fab a few brackets to mount the skid plate to the oil pan. Had to figure out what the difference is between early and late oil filter assemblies and decide which one to use. Had to get the brake shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, drums and hardware all installed. Had to yank out the leaf spring u-bolts, chop them off to the right length and re-install. Had to figure out if I am missing any items and also figure out all the hardware I need to assemble plus buy the hardware. Had get the steel brake and fuel lines all figured out and decide on what to buy and use, ie stainless, nickle/copper, powder coated, galvanized, ect. Had to do a resto on the inside of the fuel tank. Had to locate and purchase new felt for the fuel tank, Thor 100% wintergreen for rubber resto and other non-shop duties like this. And I am sure there is some **** I have forgotten too that I have done in the last month.


In a week or two I should be back into uploading pictures since there will be things to show. Lately the work doesn't really show much results so not much worthy of pictures. Soon though final assembly is in full swing and the pictures will start coming again.

That is a nice truck. I don't want to import anymore though, Homeland Security has made it very expensive. Plus, owning a GQ/Y60 Patrol means parts are hard to come by in the USA and expensive. Some day maybe I will be lucky enough to own a Y60/61 Patrol with a TD42 but not anytime soon.

By the way.....

here is something extremely rare. This is the only one of these I have ever seen or owned. This was in a 1966 Patrol I got from the original owner over 10yrs ago. I got the truck when he passed away. It had 40k original miles and the owner had kept a very detailed file on the truck since he bought it new in 1966. The file had letters to and from Nissan before he bought it with him inquiring about options, color and so forth. In the letters he selected this radio, which was an option. I think it was made by Toshiba, I can't recall the brand exactly now all these years later but it was a big Japanese brand.

The radio locked into the sleeve with a key, notice key hole back rhs side. It could be removed, old old school pull out deck. Batteries could be put in it and along with the speaker could be used outside the truck! Very cool really....

Originally they would have just been galvi coated. Nissan also put a rubber sleeve over all the hard lines.

I offered up to the owner;

-galvi, possibly with rubber sleeve
-stainless steel
-nickle/copper
-and these Poly Armour PVF coated lines. He picked these.

I ordered up all the hard brake and fuel lines today. I also recently purchased a high end flaring tool so will be doing all the flaring of ends myself. I have done it before but with a cheapo crappy tool. Looking forward to using the new flaring tool.

You might think the parts are expensive, but they're very cheap and affordable, and that's the best part of owning a Patrol! The Y60 parts come from Nissan's Thailand factory that's why they're cheap, not to mention Australia's ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/) where you can get whatever you want.

Maybe you read about it in the future when you decide to get one :) Although your FJ's are great already.

Thanks for the push in the right direction! Trust me, if I could own a Y60/61 TD42 Patrol for a reasonable cost I would! I just did the import non-USA truck thing for a lot of years and am now enjoying something readily available on these shores.

Any ways, back to the restoration!

Dizzy is mounted up, fuel pump is mounted up, starter is mounted, main pulley is mounted. Engine is starting to look sweet! Next up on it is thermostat housing with an NOS thermostat, NOS water pump, breather tube, original generator, manifolds and a rebuilt Hitachi carb.

T-case shifters and trans shifter fitted and all dialed in. New clutch from spigot/pilot bushing to throw out bearing is new and NOS parts. PTO box permanently mounted to the trans. Stock early 13 gallon fuel tank fully restored inside and out and ready to install with an NOS sending unit. Working on installing e-brake and drive lines. Then comes sway bars, bump stops, rebound/limiting rods and so forth in the suspension.

This is my favorite part of a restoration!
