    Default Small Locking Storage Box

I'm prepping my 60-series Landcruiser for a long roadtrip through Latin America.

My current project is to install a small locking storage box somewhere in the vehicle so that I can store my netbook, documentation and ideally camera bodies/lenses.

I plan to bolt it to the floor and close it with a padlock.

    The largest item I need to fit is my netbook - 8.5" x 11.5" x 1"

I've looked around at commercial offerings and the lock boxes are either tailored for jeeps or they are just too small for my needs. I can't find a pelican case or an ammo can that is the right size.

The space I'm working with is 13" wide x 17" long x 10.5" tall. I could go taller but I'd have to reduce the length. For example, 13" wide x 15" long x 12" tall would also fit.

    Any ideas or recommendations?

I want to keep this under $100 and I am happy to re-purpose something for this job ... if I could only find a lockable box that is the right size.

Look at gun safes and lockboxes. They come in every shape and size imaginable. Not all for guns necessarily, but should give you plenty of ideas.

Another option, if you can mount a hardpoint - a short length of heavy chain from the hardpoint to (for instance) the lock shackles of a Pelican box. Also it would be easier to bring inside when you have secure lodging.

Be aware, the plastic hinges and latches of a Pelican box won't stand up to any hammering with a chisel or screwdriver. Better a steel case for your purposes, I think. Zero Haliburton briefcase?

Its too bad the second one down (for the TJ) is not .5" wider. I'm looking for one for my 62 as well. If you find something good post it up.

I haven't been in any gun stores so perhaps I'll try that. I do have a couple of anchors already installed in the floor that I could use to secure the box with chain but I was hoping I could fix it in place.

When I had my 60 I had an ammo can mounted in the engine compartment. It was bolted in with carriage bolts and it was able to be locked.
They would have to pop the hood to access the box then have to deal with the locks on the ammo box.

Tuffy makes some good locking storage. I'm looking at a metal locking center console for my 80.

I had the center console from Cool Cruisers in my 60, it looks to be modeled after the Tuffy models. Don't bother with the cup holders, the fingers on the holder wore out a little too fast for my taste.
