Custom fuel tank and other aluminum or stainless fabrication

Some of you may recall the custom fuel tank I had built for my 1st gen Tacoma.





I just spent some time on the phone talking with this guy, his name is Mike btw. Mike doesn't do this for a living, rather as a hobby and on the side. However he can build just about anything out of SS or aluminum, he tig welds it all.

The tank pictured above cost me $500. So I think his prices are very reasonable. He is willing to build stuff for whomever. Thing is you can't be in a big hurry as he does this in his spare time. You also are going to have to do some work yourself, such as building a cardboard template if you say wanted a fuel tank. You also will pay shipping, Mike is in Eastern Idaho.

I am not making any money on this, just helping people out. If you want something built feel free to pm me and I will either put you in touch with Mike or pass it on to him.

I like how you used the stock spare tire supports for the tank. Out of curiosity, what is the depth of that tank and how many gallons did it end up holding? In comparison to a spare tire, it looks less which is great for clearance.

Sorry man I don't recall depth, it was awhile ago! Tank held 19.5 gallons so with the stock tank being 18.5 it gave the Taco 38 gallons of on-board fuel and range of about 500 miles. We purposely made sure the tank sat above the rear leaf hangers so it was up high and protected, it also had a skid plate. We also took out that spare tire cross member and buffed it up for the fuel tank. The straps were used to mount it and the blue stuff is irrigation hose to kill vibrations. All worked well.

If I did it again for a Taco I would change the vent port/fitting to be lower profile on the top of the tank. I would also add a bung for a float and sending unit. I didn't have a fuel gauge on mine.

Mike can fab all kinds of stuff, right now I guess he is working on a fan shroud. I am going to have him build the tank for my next project, shooting for 40 gallons. I called him today because I need some tig welding done to an alloy PTO winch.
