Back when I was a little kid just starting out in the corporate world, I worked on a research project consulting for an Austrian chemical company. Having dinner in Columbus, Ohio in the early 1980s with my clients, I brought up some of the cool little vehicles made in Austria I knew about but had never seen (our project involved composite materials for automobiles). I mentioned the Pinzgauer and the Halflinger. One of my dinner companions was a little suprised I knew about these funky vehicles, but also quite pleased. "They were designed by my father", he told me. I was impressed. At the time I didn't didn't know of Hans Ledwinka of Tatra fame (and an whole bookful of backstory with Porsche and the Beetle), or his son Erich of Pinzgauer/Halflinger fame. But I've never forgotten that dinner with that Austrian chemist named for his grandfather, or lost my affection for these Puch vehicles.

    Neat little thing, isn't it?

these are pretty cool little vehicles. There is always a group of them that turn up at NW MogFest.

    Default NWMF Awash in Hafies

Hafllingers were all over this past weekend's Northwest Mogfest. In fact, some hypothesized that there were more Hafies in one place than had previously gathered anywhere on the continent.

Lots of variety in how they looked:

In a day or two, both Flickr and YouTube will be awash in MogFest photos and videos, including lots of Haflinger stuff. (FWIW, if you go to the web to learn more about these cool vehicles, include "Steyr" in the search words or you'll end up mostly with pictures of the horse it was named after.)
