ppat,
Congratulations! (Please excuse my drooling.) One of my points was that those of us who started out with film should already be well used to shooting at the types of resolution that the D800 will return. And, at least for what I shoot, resolution rules. My only point is that for a lot of others, who shoot in a more "artistic" style, resolution is not, in an of itself, that important. In my case, my camera is welded on the RAW setting; I can throw pixels away, but I can never recreate them. Similarly, I have never heard anyone regret that they didn't use a tripod, etc. If this is really your first digital, I expect that you will be pleased with how easy the learning curve is and will love the power of the digital darkroom.
I am making my first trip back to Australia in over forty years, but sadly, will not be able to get my hands on a D800 before then!
All the best,

When you say 'purchased' do you mean 'ordered' or 'received'? I ask because for most non-pro shooters, those are two very different dates.

Yikes! Michael Reichmann summarizes the results of 3 comparisons between the 800E and several medium format cameras. Result: Nikon holds its own, if not winning outright.
"...the lower end of the medium format industry has been formally put on notice by Nikon."
