Tot-packing

Given a day of slightly cooler conditions, wind, and overcast skies, my wife, daughter and I decided to go take a little day hike. It was a sub 5 mile trail, but it was smooth and had a few interprative signs explaining some of the different plants. The area we hiked is a bit unusual for Louisiana. Its one of the few places with rock outcrops, buttes, and an average elevation of 300ft above sea level with ridges at 400+ft. I know that doesnt sound like much, but like i said, very unusual for Louisiana.

I peeled back a small piece of bark and found one of these
sp-scolopendra.jpg

Scolopendra centipedes. They can reach 8" and i figure the one i found was 6" long. Supposed to be kind of rare and pack a mean bite (can cause serious complications) if handled incorrectly.

I couldnt find it again to take a picture of the one I saw. I figure it must have gone in a hole.

Notice I'm pouring in sweat by now.... By the way, this evenflow baby carrier sucks. We went to Bass pro and we put her in 2 of the Kelty kid carriers, and the Kelty Kid Carrier -Tour was way more comfortable than mine.

Something else you don't see very often in Louisiana. Outwest its a common occurance.

Very nice. Weather hold for you?

Oh yeh. Can't wait till it cools of this autumn. There are a few hikes in that area that are nice and do not require anything more than sturdy shoes, bug repellant, and a ton of water during the summer. When I discovered the hiking in the area last year, we had our daughter and we didnt feel comfortable bringing her out there so young. Now she is going on 16 months.

Quick note on baby/toddler packs. There is no reason to buy new. I've seen so many "gently" used quality packs on craigslist and ebay for less than half price.

I bought an REI toddler pack on craigslist and paid 1/3 retail. I was only used 8 times by the previous owner.

Those pictures are great!

Cool pics, looks like you and your family had a nice hike. :) I've seen those Scolopendras as big around as a pencil before and at least 6" long. Never been bitten, but I hear it is painful.

Here is our pack and a pic from our weekend camp trip. My daughter is approaching critical mass for carrying her on my back. In another 5 pounds or so she is gonna walk everywhere!

we have a Kelty and love it. its a little big for my wife though. my boy is around 30 lbs and no problems packing him around... yet! He loves the rough stuff as well. we often run downhills and the bouncing makes him laugh.

I envy you though. I cannot wear a hat or sunglasses or they get yanked! Little bugger steals my hat and puts it on him!
