I think the thing with portals is regular preventive maintenance, which goes for any axles, portal or independent suspension or solid axles. Really its only a few extra moving parts so as long as you keep the lubrication fresh they should last a lifetime. Military hummers and H1s use them without any deal killing problems so they must be good enough.....
