Today, Samsung revealed details of the next member of its Galaxy smart phone lineup. The Galaxy III includes:
-- 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 quad-core processor
-- new graphics co-processor, reported to be 65% faster than the Mali 400 GPU used in the Galaxy II
-- 4.8 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel Super AMOLED display (306 ppi)
-- 1 GB RAM
-- 16/32/64GB of internal flash memory
-- a microSD slot for more storage (internal, next to the battery)
-- Android 4.0 operating system
-- Samsung TouchWiz user interface overlay
-- 8MP rear camera and 1.9MP front-facing camera,
-- wireless connectivity through 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC
-- built-in GPS and GLONASS receivers
-- micro USB port
-- 3.5mm headphone jack-- removable 2100mAh battery

Despite the larger screen size, the Galaxy III is only marginally larger than the Galaxy II
-- Galaxy II with 4.3 inch screen ... 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.4mm
-- Galaxy III with 4.8 inch screen ... 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm (5.4″ x 2.8″ x 0.34″)

Weight has increased slightly as well. The new phone weighs 133 g (4.6 oz), while the older Galaxy II weighs 116 g. Seems like a reasonable trade for a battery that offers 1/3 more juice.

Samsung introduced several new software features with the Galaxy III:
-- Smart Stay, a camera app that keeps the screen turned on as long as it detects a face looking at the screen (useful for e-book readers, among others)
-- S Voice, Samsung's voice recognition software, similar to Apple's SIRI
-- several more, see this link for details http://gizmodo.com/5907416/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-meet-the-new-android-emperor

Samsung says the new Galaxy III will be available in USA in June. I expect both HSPA+ and LTE versions will be available. Check with your favorite mobile carrier. No pricing was announced.

Here are posts that compare the specs of the Galaxy III with the iPhone 4S and the HTC One X.

The Galaxy III has a quad core processor, the One X has a slightly faster dual core processor. We'll have to wait until the galaxy III ships to see what advantages the quad core processor may provide.

In comparison, the iPhone is looking like last year's technology (which is true, the 4S is little changed from last year's iPhone 4).
