Actually i am not sure if i plan a lift.
My preferences are pretty much the " icelandic-style " that means wide, low and wide.

Here's a few pictures of mine. it's lifted about 2" using a custom leafpack in the rear, and a spacer up front. Everything else: brake lines, shocks, etc are stock.
I'm running 235/75-R16s which I think are about 29.8" tall, which for a lot of companies is technically a 30" tire. I could easily step up to 31's if I wanted, but honestly these 30's stuff perfectly into my wheelwells and never rub. I'd be gaining about .5" under the diff, so not really worth it, unless an amazing deal plopped in my lap to buy a set.

Looks a bit narrow, with such high wheels in only 235 with.
Beefy tires are an advantage when running on bad roads, letting out air gives car a chance to " smothen out " that hardly can be acchieved with suspension uppgrades.....
More pics of unlifted XJs with larger tires will be appriciated...
mine is lifted 3" with 30s if you would like, my tires are skinny but it still looks good.

Question: i can se a lot of jeeps with " bolted " fenderflares, i belive they are ment to be used with larger tires.
Type shown in picture below:
41_1524884613.jpg
How " small " tires are suitable for such flares ? I do NOT want to lift the car " us style ( tall, with narrow tires " but a wider track is of interest, making room for wider tyres.
Can anyone point out correct way to search for info on such extended flares ?
Edit: i see Buschwacker is a source for such fenders, and also Napier Production. Any preferences btw ?

A true 30" tire will still cause some rubbing with a stock-height XJ.
I have a '99. It's a good year, but I've slowly started to notice that once you hit past 160,000 miles on the odometer, it starts to give you more and more niggling problems. I'm actually looking to replace mine with a Commander sometime shortly.
EDIT: Napier Precision Works is a few miles north of where I live. From what I've seen, they build a good product. If I were to choose between them and Bushwacker, I'd pick Napier any day of the week.
nice jeep to start with for your project
