Beginner in GPS & computers

Hi All

When it comes to computers and GPS Im a complete beginner. Can someone explain to me in simple terms what i would need to turn my laptop into a GPS system. I get the computer and softwear, but how do i recieve a signal? do i need an ariel?.

You need a GPS "puck" that plugs into your USB port. I attache the puck to the dashboard using velcro. The puck will need appropriate drivers then should be available for use by your software. Note that Garmin software will only recognize Garmin devices.

I use the following setup in my rig...
- Ram Toughtray with closeable type laptop arms, dual hinged arms and modified post $250
- 13" Macbook Air (250gb, all solid state, aluminum uni-body, etc) $1700
- US Globalsat BU353 GPS Reciever (velcro to top of dash) - $40
- Software: MacGPS Pro c/w MacTopos (1:250k for Canada, 1:50k for Alberta) - $110 for program and complete set of Canada topos
- plus an inverter in the glove box
