Thread: My build - work in progess

Default My build - work in progess

Well the Sankey trailer rebuild has been put on ice due to Norwegian vehicle inspectors only giving me a 200 kg usable load on the sankey trailer.

A local made trailer with a Land Rover defender bolt circle was available and purchased.

    I can load this with a 1000kg.

The first job was to get rid off excess stuff.

Stripped down to bear chassis shows that the frame is not as strong as I would like so I have to go up a dimension in my own build.

I will make it modular so I can easily change the chasis further down the road should it deem necessary.

I am building it around the the Howling Moon trailer top tent.

It will be delivered next week.

Stripped down makes it eaier to take measurements.

Bits left over now sold - money in the kitty.

I have ordered 8 door locks from the bay of E. now I need an extra 1.

I will use the hub adaptors to fit Discovery 3 wheels to the defender hubs.

The studs are a little too long,

So they are off for machining.

The aluminium for the frame was ordered to day, if my calcs are correct then the frame should come in around about 30 - 35 kg

Sad about the Sankey!!! what sort of suspension is on the new build C n W??? interesting project

Its not the best suspension in the world, its avonride axle rated to 1300 Kg.

The Howling moon trailer top tent arrived at customs today, import taxes are paid so I am just waiting for clearance.

The frame is starting to take shape, only tack welded at the moment for control.

More bracing put into day, almost finished with bracing and roof bars.

Ordered 2 sheets of 4mm ali for the roof and floors, the floor will be welded, and the top riveted.

Ordered water and pressure proof rivets today, they could'nt give me a price yet but it sounds expensive.

I will use TEC 7 mastic / waterproof compound around all holes and plates to make sure we get a watertight and flexable joints.

Then I got a package from customs today

    What could be inside ??? :P :P :P :P

    Hi Biskit,

yes they are similar so I have to be real careful taking this way offroad.

    Floor got welded in

and some braces for future jerry can holders on the back wall.

I finally go the wheel studs back from the machine shop.

    and mounted the D3 wheels

but its a bit wider than the D3 now.

    .

Work continues, still waiting on the door latches from ebay.

top plate will be trimmed tomorrow, then the doors, thats going to be a challenge.

    Stout frame, very nice!

    Work continues

Front and back walls welded on today, some bracing for a possible spare wheel holder on the front wall.

Hinges - I thought about using stainless piano hinges and riveting them on, there is enough rivets there to hold it.

Looking at the front wall the extra plates for possible spare wheels visiable.

The back, after lookin at the pictures I should have made it in one piece and cut out the door, oh well live and learn, will do that on the next one

The front, I was planning to powder coat it, but how about buffing up and having it shiny ?

    Inside the back door.

265Kg off aluminium has been used so far.
