Raising this from the dead... I have a DOHC 3.5 and used dual Ford Contour factory fan and a comtroller from DC controls. Once I got high enough amperage fuse it's been trouble free and the two speed fan with after run is very nice...

image.jpgHi guys I have taken out the power sapping viscous, because the viscous unit went anyway, and installed a pacet 16" single electric fan which comes on at 90 degrees, I have wired up a simple led light, so that when the fan is on, the light is on. It cruises better with less noise and have put two hilux bonnet vents in to dissipate the heat.
See my pictures on expedition pajero LWB.
why not consider adding a switch, and using a 5 pin relay for the A/C fan? this way, it will run with the A/C off. keep your reliable mech fan, and have the added cooling of a second fan that is already there, and factory reliable.

I could see this being a good option. However, I've had the electric fan for over a year with no issues at all and rock solid temps. My original reason to do the swap was because I went through two fan clutches in about a year and they always failed in places where a new one was at least 2 days out..
Montero mech fans are ok if you are driving or accelerating down here in the desert but at low speeds they are worthless. Everything on these V6's is designed for high RPM operation, Even with a solid non clutched fan and upgrade 3 row radiator they try to get warm at low or no speed once the outside temps get 0ver 105 degrees. So i got tired of having to rev my engine while waiting my turn to climb an obstacle or on a long steep hill climb. I would much rather have a mech fan do the job because i like the reliability but it just isn't up to the task. I run Volvo electric fan and it has done its job better than the mech fan and it also cools the entire under side of the truck quite a bit. Yes i run a brand new radiator and yes i have a newish water pump (my motor has 52k on it). I would however like to go to another custom radiator and mech fan, just the radiator would need to be more serious than my previous custom 3 row brass. I'm thinking a 3 row aluminum and a small aux fan on my oil cooler.
Here's my Volvo fan, it fits much better on the stock OEM 2 row.
