On my 96SR, I was able to use a fan and clutch from a sport with the 3.5l engine.

You can probably cross reference it by checking the part numbers for different year monteros and Montero sports using vin numbers from each year/model (see faq post on 4x4wire) and the Mitsubishi ASA program (download from Mitsubishilinks.com).

I haven't had any problem yet with cooling, but there's a lot of good info here, so I'll be following this closely

This could be a gauge issue. I have this problem with my 2001 Montero. The gauge slowly moves up and down but mainly stays on hot. I have verified that the engine temp is normal. There is a circuit board on the back of the gauge panel that can cause the temp gauge to read hot when the engine temp is normal. The dealer says to replace and reprogram the circuit board is $800-$900. Do a web search for bad Montero temperature gauge. There are a lot of reports of this over the years. I am planning to add a secondary digital temp gauge.

Yep, funny, those little bugs. A friend just bought a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. Check engine light comes on so she takes it to autozone to get it checked out, codes point to catalytic converter. She then goes to an exhaust shop where they ordered her a new catalytic converter ($350?!?! + labor!?). I decided I'd run the codes with my OBDII scanner. The car only has 70k on it which red-flagged me about it not being the cat. So I ran the codes on the net, and sure enough the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid has a recall where they need to reprogram the computer to reflect the correct catalytic temps in the sensors. Check engine light goes off, and hasn't come back on. She's now stuck with a $350 catalytic converter that she doesn't need (shop wouldn't return or refund a special order item)... but at least I saved her the labor costs, another $300...

My point is that unless Grandpa said something, its quite frustrating how much money one could spend trying to figure out an issue!! Thank goodness for Uncle Google.

She should have checked with Honda regardless. Car manufacturers are required to cover major emissions components for 8 years 80000 miles according to EPA rules. http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt

Oh and I just noticed the top hose on the radiator is clapsing (inflated or getting flat looking) when the motor was hot after I turned the car off. Is that anything to do with that. Should I change it ?
