Default Some White Rim Trail pics

    MORE PICS ADDED 6/18/12

Went on White Rim trail in Canyonlands National Park, thought I'd share a few pics. I really enjoyed the trail, I have been to Moab many times but it was really cool to get out there where you are pretty much by yourself...we only met a few vehicles in two days on the trail. And the trail itself, while not technical driving for the most part, is actually quite fun to drive, with lots of interesting climbs, switchbacks, ledge roads that will have you leaning away from the precipice, etc.

This is our group of vehicles, my 95 Trooper, a VehiCross, and a 2012 Wrangler Rubicon

The view from Island in the Sky. You can see the trail far below, and in the distance the whitish ledge rock that gives the trail its name.

So how do you get down to the trail, you ask? Via the Shafer Switchbacks...a test for those with a fear of heights.

Not far into the trail there is a short hike to an overlook

Musselman Arch, which you can walk across if you are brave

    The view from Gooseberry camp

    Thus endeth day one.

Very nice! Great pics. My family with another ran it 6 years ago in February. Snowed overnight on us the last night of camping in Potato Bottoms. Anybody who hasn't run the White Rim Trail is missing out on a load of fun and fantastic scenery. One of those "must do before I die" trails. Thanks for posting.

Great pics BigSwede. The White Rim trail is definitely one of my favorite’s places to venture around. I’d love to return now that Mineral Bottom is open where the trail can be done in one loop rather than just ¾ of the way.

    Thanks everybody.

The switchbacks on Mineral Bottom road are interesting in and of themselves...perhaps not quite as exciting as Shafer, but close.

My avatar picture was actually taken on the Shafer Switchbacks while we were waiting on a road grader to let us squeeze by in July 2011 just before the sky opened up and started raining like crazy. Neat place!

Thanks for the motivation. Usually don't get done with classes until mid June so the heat and crowds keep me away from Southern Utah and Northern Arizona Parks. Probably going to be furloughed next year so I can go in May. Any body want to join a trip in May 2013?
