Default D2 - VSS/WSS cleaning... and ABS Amigo in Prescott Area?

On day 2 of my last trip I pulled out from fueling up to find the brake and ABS lights on, and no speedometer. A quick check with the Scangauge showed a code P0501: vehicle speed sensor fault. This eventually leads to a CEL with code P1592, essentially complaining about P0501 having been present too long. Neither are critical errors, but it is annoying not having all the speed-dependent items working (I'd taken for granted how much vehicle/wheel speed affects).

My guess is during the axle swap about 1,500 miles ago some dirt or grease worked it's way into the hole when I was putting my sensors in. Any advice on successful methods to clean these? Should they be lubed at all, or just clean and dry?

Also, I have nothing capable of clearing this code, not even an overnight battery disconnect worked. I'm guessing I need an ABS Amigo to do this (or a dealership... hundreds of miles away)? Does anyone in the Prescott area have one I can borrow?

    Thanks in advance.

I'll try to paste a page for you. Basically the manual says new o ring and anti seize for the sensor when you remove replace it. I'd start by checking the wheel sensors and see if there is one that is loose. If your TC light isn't on I don't think the ABS amigo is the solution. Their website mentioned what codes it is for though. Let's see if this works

    Sensor - ABS - Front

    Service Repair No - 70.65.30

    Remove

Release ABS sensor harness grommet from inner wing valance and disconnect multiplug.

Pull harness through aperture into wheel arch.
Release harness from brackets on inner wing valance, suspension turret and front hub.
    Remove front brake disc.

Remove Allen screw, release ABS sensor from front hub and discard O-ring.

Loosen 4 bolts securing front hub to swivel hub.
Release front hub from swivel hub sufficiently to allow sensor harness to be removed.
    Refit

Clean ABS sensor and mating face.
    Apply anti-seize grease to sensor.
    Lubricate and fit new O-ring
Position ABS sensor between hub and swivel hub. Tighten Allen screw to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.) .
Position hub and tighten bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) .
Secure harness to brackets and secure grommet to inner wing valance.
    Connect multiplug to harness.
    Fit front brake disc.

Well it didnt add the diagrams but hopefully you've got a copy of the Workshop manual. $$$$358.00 on Amazon right now, or free with option for donation at Land Rover Resource. If all the sensors check out it could be a ABS ECU fault. So check the wires and connections well at both ends. Good Luck and Drink plenty of water it's gotta be hot out there

Oh yeah to clean them use alcohol; or acetone if you are going to replace the o-rings. If an OBD-II scanner at the local parts store won't clear the code even temporarily I don't know what will other than a trip to the dealer. I do think that is likely to be an immediate fault so it should go away on its own once the issue is resolved

I didn't think about that... the warning did pop up right away. Hopefully the code clears when the sensor is cleaned and/or replaced. Fortunately, I already have a copy of the service manual. I'll give the cleaning/reinstall a try as soon as I can.

    Thanks

Your welcome sorry I couldn't give you more to work with. Thankfully my to face that same problem hasn't came yet. (Knock on Wood) So if your parked will the CEL get cleared by an OBD-II scanner? If its a readout problem from the sensor I would think it should clear until one doesn't read with the rest of them. Then again it could be taking static readings from voltage too.
