Default Skamper Rebuild Problem: Cannot Raise the Roof

My dad, with as much help from my brother and me as our schedules allow, has been rebuilding the roof on his '85 Skamper. We were planning to finish the build today until we went to raise the roof and the Heco lift system crank started slipping. The teeth on the gear are a little worn but that doesn't seem to be the only problem. Could it be the torsion bars? When we first installed them they were pushing out the walls of the roof so much that we assumed it was wrong.

ETA the top went up ok during the build but today the canvas and rubber roof went on so there was definitely more weight on the lift system.

New Crank Handle? Not sure where to start with out physically being there. I would first try to push the roof up while someone else is cranking it up. If it is a weight thing it should go up, but I cant imagine that being it. I would guess you have something binding in the lifting mechanism.
