First off im kind of new to the forum and just want to say hey and thanks in advanced for ANY help you can give. I have a 97 Montero ls and recently blew a head gasket..i think...she has all the symptoms but not so much the battle scars.. i've heard that the seals arent very good but i took the heads off anyway and got one planed down just to be safe and i finally removed the driver side head and im about to get it done as well. where the problem is is that i dont know where the timing marks need to be at if anyone has any suggestions on where to look for FREE that would have a picture cause im at the point of SOL and i really miss my rig and want to go camping in the next month. And when i say i miss my rig example > ive been having to drive the wife's 06 escape to work...really hurts pulling up with a 2wd

I purchased the factory manual for my truck and would have been lost without it. Money well spent. I have done total rebuilds and engine replacements on my 85 montero. Need to know torque specs on head bolts ect...

Welcome to the forum.

First off, there's no way you can rebuild this engine and do it right without a service manual. Pay close attention to the torque values, if you don't, trouble is just around the corner.

If you have the 97 model than you have the 3.5L SOHC, so download the 1998 manual.

Thanks grasscat i'll go ahead and get one from that page cause ive been trying to find a haynes manual and at my buddies shop there was a dusty box of old books and i thought i had finally found one but as i found out a few days later its only for 83-93 but no i dont have the tool to adjust the timing belt tensioner how hard is it to find one

Haynes manuals for the Montero aren't even worth their weight in lead. Download the FSM or buy one from the dealer or on eBay.

I downloaded the FSM and im reading through it right now...think i might print it out tomorrow...really liking it, very detailed, will never go back to a Haynes again and looking at everyone's rigs on here it makes me want to get mine fixed even more
