    Default dvd to mpeg programs

I have a camcorder that records on a DVD that I want to be able to e-mail the (kid-o) movie clips. It was a gift so it does not conect to the computer via usb, and I am guessing I need to convert the dvd to mpeg. What program is best for this?

Adobe Premier Elements will convert to MPEG. It's a great movie editing program too if you want to play movie editor.

Pinnacle should have something out there for you too. That's not too expensive and does what you need.

Ummm, isn't it de facto standard athat DVD video is encoded in MPEG2 anyway? Are you talking about converting into MPEG1?

Do you have a 1394 port that you can just pull the raw video and encode in some basic MS or Apple desktop video prog?

That's correct. However MPEG2 is a large file to deal with - he wants to email it. Plus, you can't just grab a DVD "FILE" so to speak off a dvd. You have to rip it or capture it in the computer. You cant just copy the video_ts file , it doesn't work that way. He just needs to capture it and then compress it.

He needs software to tell the computer to 'capture' the usb stream coming in.
He also needs a firewire out port on the camera. Yep, a apple can do this right out of the box.

That camera should have come with software no?

One other thing.. is it a mini dvd? Then download a ripping program like DVDXONE and then pop your disc in the tray. Then proceed to rip it with the software. It will create a desktop file you can possibly email depending upon size.

Well, I've many times simply pulled and managed the .VOB files independently depending on their CSS status. I am guessing the camera doesn't CSS `encrypt' the MPEG2 stream it writes.

Do those cameras do something different than the DVD video standard?

Not sure how the camcorders write to the discs these days. That camera should have come with software and a cable though.

On a Mac you'd use Handbrake to rip the DVD to an MPEG file and then iMovie to convert it to an "e-mail
-able" format. =) Probably doesn't help you much does it?

Nope, I thought about returning and get one that did, but couldn't break my grandmother's heart, so I kept it and didn't ask for a receipt. It is a low end Panasonic camcorder. If igure once I figure out how to get to e-mail small movies, it will be great for the grandparents to watch FlyingBaby grow!
