NYC Defender, diamond in the rough

That's how much land is worth in Manhattan, as well as how expensive it is to park your car: it's cheaper to buy those things than to lease more land for your parking lot.

It's basically the definition of what happens when too many people want to be in the same place at the same time and are too special to use public transportation.

How do the cars get up and down from their "parked positions"? Forklifts?

I just went to You Tube and searched for vertical parking lots, and sure enough, there are vertical parking lots in NYC. I have never seen one before. The world is getting a bit weird.

Where was that taken? Midtown I'm assuming, or right outside the Holland or Lincoln. There are I believe at least 10 Defenders I know of within about 14 blocks from my place. This one not included. I live in the West Village, NYC and don't believe I've seen that one around before. I love how much higher the car above it had to be stacked. I always check "the stacks" hoping to see a Defender up in one - never had any luck though. Sweet shot!

While we were up in NYC this past weekend, Main Line Overland's Dan Etheridge snapped a few cool photos of a Defender he spotted. I think a good title for this photo would be "Diamond in the Rough", enjoy!

It was spotted about a block away from the B&H Photo Video Pro Audio store in NYC.

The stacks are the lifts themselves. They pull the car out on the bottom and then the rover down. I doubt that rover is local as he has no front plate (PA doesn't).

I'm a bridge a tunnel guy, so I park in Manhattan often. They ask you how long so they can put you in a retrievable place. I try not to park near the tunnels, as they have event and theater rates (gouge).

For the poster who said "to special to ride mass transit", that's not my case at all. If four of us go into the city, that's $52 bucks round trip on the train, plus restricted travel plans. I can usually park cheaper, and then I'll take the subway.

You must live pretty close like East Orange or something - $52 round trip for 4 is CHEAP! You're easily approaching $100 from Bernardsville round trip for 4.

I live on the Raritan Valley line, so it's not a single seat ride. My other reason for driving.

I can imagine why you drive in that situation -- I'm out on the Gladstone Branch, which is also a 2-seat ride except a handful of rush hour Midtown Directs. It takes forever. (Plus side is that I get a ton of reading done, about 2-3 books a week.) On the flip side, I drove in today and was from garage (Columbus Circle area) to home (Somerset County) in about an hour.

If possible, I'll still take the train though -- I don't like other people driving my RRC, and it does stand out in the station parking lot amongst the shiny BMWs and Lexuses!
