how to install tent on the back of truck?

We have a 2005 Dodge truck. We started using this truck now for most of our summer daily driving and all our towing needs such as the ATVs and trailer. We picked up a cheep car top tent and I have my ideas on how to mount it but would like to know how others have done this.

Do you have a camper shell, or are you going to place it over the c-channels of the bed?

I was going to have a headache bar made with side rails. I saw some attachments from a Rack company but I was afraid of the side rails bending or denting do to the weight of the tent and four people in there.
