    Default 2012 Idaho Overland Expedition

    Why we did it:
We feel many have lost their sense of adventure and are now disconnected from nature and from each other. Visiting new places and sharing a meal with others produces a sense of connection for the traveler. This connection makes them better prepared to manage the world’s resources and relationships. After hearing Ted Simon speak at the 2012 Overland Expo, we decided we could help make a difference and promote The Ted Simon Foundation. The foundation was started in 2011 to pair adventure travelers with mentors to develop the traveler’s ‘observations and insights into something of value for the rest of the world to share, whatever their medium of expression might be.’ The goal is to equip travelers with the ability to effectively share their experiences traveling in different cultures and thus promote world understanding. This allows us all to better ‘understand the beauties, the mysteries, and the tragedies of our world. No traveler, in our experience, ever came home with a message of hate.’

Ted Simon speaking at the 2012 Overland Expo

    What we did:
On July 4, 2012 four adventure travelers set out to traverse the state of Idaho, from Wyoming to Oregon, on backcountry roads. We followed the Idaho Overland Route, which allowed us to traverse the state on as few paved roads as possible. The route took us from Wyoming across the Upper Snake River Plain, through Idaho’s Central Mountains, over the Owyhee Uplands, and finally into Oregon. We completed the journey in five days and covered roughly 725 total miles with over 600 miles on dirt/gravel roads. We had the opportunity to camp in some of Idaho’s most rugged places and see portions of the state few know about. Along the way we encountered road closures, mechanical failures, and flat tires. These obstacles only served to take four people, who barely knew each other, and turn them into lifelong friends who are now ready to tackle the next big expedition.

More information on our trip can be found on our blog, www.LivingOverland.com, by clicking here. Over the next few weeks (as work slows down) I will be posting information about each leg of the trip.

I have done lots of cool things in life....still on a high afterwards...this was definitly one of the coolest. The trip very well organized. Beau made sure we all had an input on many...if not all the decisions. We were truly a team and no time did we feel like we were just following along.

I learned so much on this trip. I have been camping, hiking, etc all my life. I have been in some gawd awful places as well as a few trips to paradise. Still I am internally processing everything I learned.

The team came together quickly and was willing to pitch in for big and small problems.

Having a small team with a shared vision, coming from different back grounds, but still having a common thread we quickly bonded.

We racked up a lot of miles, sucked down tons of dirt, and were not shy to give a couple of man hugs at the border of Oregon.

When I look at other events I have either participated in....or ones I have tried to get a handle on....this is by far exceptional planning and execution. There was never a question about the dates, the location, the objectives, etc. I know quite a few event planners and expedition leaders that could use a lesson or two from this experience.

I was fortunate to have some great folks...not just Beau and Lance, but Andy, Blaine, and Claudia be so excepting of my kiddo on the expedition. The week we returned she decided that was what she wanted to do the rest of her life so we began her Jeep project this last weekend. You guys (and a gal) probably don't realize the influence you had on her.

Seeing Beau and his Dad interact, trade jabs, and discuss tactics, it was a great insight to what fathering really is. Blaine did a hell of a job in raising Beau, and I hope he knows it. He grew a great leader and incredible man.

Again, agreat trip and I am finding an emptiness returning to the office....post expedition depression I guess..... So when is the next one?

Thank you for the feedback guys! It was an amazing trip, and one I hope to do each year...

After spending 5 days on dirt roads, I found it rather odd to be driving home on the Interstate. It felt unnatural!

Work has been crazy since the trip, and my free time has been spent coordinating interviews for the Outdoor Retailer show in a couple of weeks. I should have time tonight to finish organizing and begin editing the photos from the trip. I should have plenty to post on facebook this weekend and will try to work on a post when I am not working this weekend. (seems like every time I take a vacation, I end up working overtime the following weeks)

Teaaron and Kurt, you guys would have really enjoyed this trip. Next time!

Did you get out and throw the fly in? If so, how was the fishing?
We are headed up there for 10 days...plan to fish the Big Wood, SF of the Boise, Lost Creek, Salomon River, and maybe Silvercreek...
