    Default Offroad Camping Trailer V2.0

So i finally got started on V2.0 of my offroad camping trailer.

My first attempt for a offroad trailer was more of a teardrop trailer, unfortunately I got busy and never finished the roof so it leaked water and after about a year it was rotted. So I tore down the box and kept the frame, this is my second attempt and my original plan...

I picked up a Roof Top Tent from a local Lost Jeeps member, and that pushed me to start working on the trailer again.

The tent needs a little work but other than that it is in good shape, mainly needs a new mattress made, a few rips on the rain fly and the wood floor needs new braces.

The plan for the trailer is to have a slide out kitchen, and refrigerator, a 26 gallon water tank with instant hot heater and 20 gallons of fuel capacity.

The kitchen will have 2 burners, a sink and a slide out BBQ.

Here is where I am at so far.

    Default Nice Start

    Hey Bud-

Your basic design is close to what I have - an Outlander trailer. I did not want a tear drop design and was considering a tub-type surplus trailer
when I saw an outlander for sale here on Expo. I looked at the website and I liked the modularity that the "rectangular cage" offers. I ended up buying that one I
saw selling here. Are you going skin the exterior or install boxes/compartments? As you can see below my rig has cargo boxes bolted to it and in it as opposed to
an exterior skin. One big-azz custom-sized main box (aluminum) and two side boxes (steel) that I installed after removing 2 existing smaller ones. There is also an open cargo
area at the front section before the tougue. I've built a kitchen and re-wired /lamped it so far. I am half way thru my planned modifications and look forward to seeing yours progress.

I will have a 14G steel skin on the boxes and a 1/2" plywood floor on the frame. right now the idea is to have jerry cans on the sides of the trailer and all the gear in the center box. as I build it might change...

Spent a few hours yesterday and started the fenders, they are made from 1x1 1/8" wall tubing.

    nice looking trailer!

why plywood for the floor? why not some thickness of metal, maybe 11 gauge? and seam-sealer the crap out of it. to me the plywood will always lead to rot, and keep a lot of moisture up against the frame.

looking forward to seeing it completed!

I am still debating on that. I might just use 14G steel for all the paneling. Last friday I jump started someones car and it fried my battery isolator and stereo, so I decided to re do my jeeps accessory power so that took the majority of the week. I did get the RTT mounted on the jeeps roof rack and started to get it fixed up. Next week my fabricator it out of town so I won't have much time to work on my projects as I will be doing production work... Hopefully next weekend I can get back to the trailer.

Well I made some progress, I got some new foam for a new mattress and made a new cover for it. I mounted it to the jeep and tested it out and I slept so well... Ill never use a ground tent again haha.

This morning I headed to the steel yard with a bunch of sizes and had them cut up 2 4x10ft 16g steel sheets, $160 later I had my steel for the sides.

The front box I folded the top lip. (It helps I have a shop full of metal working tools.)

The sides I welded on the inside so once it is done you will see the frame work.
