I know I'm at the complete opposite of the globe, but I got a TGB1314 (the same chassis as the 304) that I converted to Toyota diesel, a 1KZ-T, including gearbox. The Volvo weighs, including cab, new engine, larger tires (Michelin ZXL 11x9) etc., but complete bare chassis otherwise, 2,100 kgs with me (100kg) in it, IMOP a good starting point!
The 1KZ-T seems like a good fit and adequate powerwise, and parts etc. are readily awailable...

I have driven mogs (316) and the Volvo is more confortable, cheaper, easier to work on, so a good bet if you don't need the size of the mog.

Did you use the Toyota Tansfercase? What sort of cruise speed do you get with the XZLs? Have you looked at aftermarket parabolics , discs , power steer kits, etc that I see are now available? I realise this is an old thread but any info would be much appreciated as I realise there is far more knowledge base on these chassis in your corner of the world.
