I own two first gen KLRs. The wife's blue 1998 has about 15k on it and my red/black 04 has about 50k on it. Guess which one has had fewer issues? Yep, the one with more miles!!!
I'd by the bikes with the farkles!

Anyone know what this is?

98 XJ- 3.5" RE lift
It's a Battery Tender plug in for charging the battery. Also used to power some accessories like heated clothing.
Ahh, I thought it looked like a plug but I didn't think of that. Unfortunately the current owner doesn't seem to know a whole lot about it.

Well, post more pictures and I'm sure we can help.
I'm going to go look at it this week, so any tips for what to look at would be appreciated.

well, weekend is over? do you have a new bike in the garage?
I was ready to buy today, went down and ride it and kinda scared my self so I chickened out. Now I'm thinking I need to start it with a smaller bike.
Wise choice!
If you have any doubts it's best to seek a path of more education and training first. (Or at least more practice on a smaller bike) If you felt the KLR was too big it's best to find something smaller to use for the time being. There is TONS of fun to be had on smaller bikes. Don't let anyone convince you any different.
KLRs will always be around later!![]()
