A 3/4 ton has not only heaver suspension, but larger brakes, improved cooling and stronger transmission. Proper drive train matching with usage can maximize fuel ecomomy, but it'll never match an empty compact. If you only load the camper twice a year, and head off with the boat, it's probably not worth having a HD truck. But if you go often, on rough roads and with the family, maybe ya oughta buy a truck.
Just sold this one I had for over 20 years.
'80 Powerwagon, '66 383 BB, np435 4spd trans, NP208 transfer, d60 front 4:11, D70 rear 4:11, 35" mt's, 6" skyjacker softride. 1/2 ton chassis with 1 ton drivetrain.

The Trooper replaced this which was bought back under lemon law. Loved the truck but you gotta have brakes. Actually this truck was the original start of trying to make the retirement dream happen. Planned a FWC and this would also tow the boat. Like most of my stuff the boat was a resto project. Brought it home with this and the truck had to go a few months later. I've had horrid luck with new vehicles. Tired of being a factory prototype tester at my expense!

I've owned several other fullsized trucks over the years. My 1st was a 1949 GMC! I didn't buy that one new. Ha ha
In many ways a fullsize would be the easy and cheaper way to go. Used slide-ins for FS are cheap on CL. It's just not what I'm wanting to do right now. Like I said this is just a feeler thread. Something like 1st gen Tundra might get the nod as a good compromise.
