Not to be rude, but do you know what a Mitsubishi Montero engine bay with a 3.5L looks like?
No offense taken. I have no idea. I don't own one.

When you eliminate the fan you just remove the fan from the existing pulley which has the belt on it..The pulley remains, just the fan assembly is removed.. I believe the fan is on the water pump drive.???..

The water pump is driven by the timing belt. The fan is located on the cooling fan bracket assy which has the fan and a pulley that drives the alternator on the SOHC 12 valve engine and drives the alternator and power steering pump on the SOHC/DOHV 24 valve engines.

As long as you can find a quality electric fan setup that fits your radiator the answer is yes.

I think you also need to know what the cooling requirements at for a turbo diesel before you safely do it.

A shrouded electric fan will move more cfm than any mechanical fan when the vehicle is at low speeds or a stop which is where its needed. it will work just fine.
