Google has a new app for smart phones. It's called Field Trip. The purpose of the app is to track the phone's location, and alert you to "interesting things" nearby. The app leverages the vast set of information Google has collected through its mapping efforts. It also takes advantage of contributions from specialist web sites such as Arcadia, Thrillist, Food Network, Zagat, Eater, Sunset, Cool Hunting, WeHeart, Inhabitat, Remodelista, Atlas Obscura, Daily Secret, Songkick and Flavorpill. (A hipster roll call if there ever was one. Maybe more travel and outdoor adventure web sites will be added in the future.)

The app gives you options regarding the types of things you want to be notified about, and under what circumstances you want to be notified.

The free app is available today for Android phones through the Google Play store here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nianticproject.scout

"Coming soon" to iOS phones, too.
