My wife and I left US soil one week ago today. The plan is to spend a few months south of the border. And that's about as far as our plans go. We've been inspired by so many people here on Expedition Portal, I'll post here so that hopefully we can help someone else in the future.

We are traveling in a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero and already we are having the time of our lives.

"Where the eyes go" is a line from a favorite book of ours, The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein. I highly recommend you read it.

Denny, the valiant hero, is a amateur race car driver and he imparts much of his wisdom to the philosophical narrator, Enzo, who happens to be his dog. Early on in the book, Denny and Enzo teach how to successfully navigate a wet race track and we decided that it's a pretty good way to navigate life as well.

"The car goes where the eyes go."

This mantra will always be symbolic in our life but it will also be a very literal guide for us on our upcoming road trip through Mexico and Central America.

Hey guys,

You're in for an amazing trip!

You'll probably find http://wikioverland.org The encyclopedia of overland travel really helpful for your trip.
It has info for all the countries in central America like border crossings, gas prices, camping, maps, bribery, etc. etc.

If you see something that's out of date, please take 5 minutes and click "edit" and update the page - that way it will be better and more useful for everyone.

A good starting point for you might be the Pan American Highway page. From there, you can click through to all the countries on your route.

Thanks, have fun!

Yeah we used that site a bit in our planning. It's a great resource! I had kinda forgotten about it so thanks for reminding me! We'll be sure to use it and update anything we can. Thanks!

Cool, thanks.
I'm happy to hear the site was useful.

Can you think of anything you'd like to see added? How could the site be better?
I'd like to help other Overlanders in any way I can, that's why I created WikiOverland.

Thanks,
-Dan

Just off the top of my head, maybe a recommended packing list. What not to bring etc... It really is a great resource as it is.

Latest two posts on the blog:

We find a hot springs waterfall, search unsuccessfully for water cows, see a bit of Guatemala City, and leave the Montero behind with a friend while we go to the US for a weekend.

We fly back to Guate from the States, visit some Mormon temples, and meet tons of cool people. Less adventurous in this post, but tons of unforgettable memories.
