Thread: Re-tread tires

  1. #141
I've had a set of Treadwright GuardDog 315/75/16's on my '05 chevy 2500hd for approx 1 year. They currently have approx 8k miles on them.

Waited about 10 full weeks from order to delivery.

They have molding imperfections that I was assured would not be an issue (and havn't been so far)

Within 6 weeks of having them mounted, there was a large balloon bulge about the size of a softball that appeared on my right front tire in the tread portion. Thank God it first appeared when I was stopped and picking my son up from school and not going 70 down the freeway.
    (pics are on another computer)

Contacted them with pics of both the outside and inside of the tire and they replaced it at no charge to me, and I had the tire in hand within one week.

They ran fine, not louder than any other MT, nor any quieter.

I monitor my air pressures regularly and keep them and my overload bags on the rear axle all equal. The left rear has worn CONSIDERABLY worse than the rest, with zero reason other than poor construction. It's approx 1/4" more worn in the center of the tread than the other three (which are wearing GREAT IMHO).

It's a toss up. You get what you pay for. At $140 ea, they are considerably cheaper than new MT's of any flavor, but they are not without their issues.

I will not be purchasing another set because I value steering, braking, acceleration, towing, and above all the safety of my family and myself as well as others on the road.
I'm currently researching replacements and going to relegate the last 3 good ones to off road trailer and spare tire usage.

I would say they are not quieter, but the hum my 315-70-17 Guard Dogs put off is far more annoying than any of the 30 other sets of MT tires I have ran. Higher pitched is what I think. Actually will give me a headache after awhile of driving with the windows down.

I agree with the tone, high pitched, not what people expect (not similar to the old MT/R that they look like). I found them both very loud, and an annoying tone. I much prefer a more traditional, low mud tire rumble if I'm going to run a loud tire.

After reading a lot of different posts here and on other boards I decided to give the 265/75-16 Guard Dogs a try. I had no problem getting them balanced and so far they are riding great.

I agree on the high pitched whine (don't think it can be called a hum). That and the weight of the tires will probably drive me back to my previous tire. That said, they've been great on the trail. Their performance on Hole in the Rock, Blanca Peak and Poughkeepsie Gulch was impressive.

I've been running a set for about 3 weeks now on my Cherokee. They are Guard Dog 31x10.5's. My sidewalls are Yokohoma Geolanders. No real problems yet, but only time will tell how they hold up. A lot of guys on cherokee forum run them. I will say that I have heard much better reviews for the class C sidewalls that for other, higher pressure, sidewalls. I am running mine at about 28-29 PSI as my Cherokee is, at this point, still pretty light.

Still love mine. If I had a 1000+ mile trip or something with a lot of highway miles, Id look at a different tire, or a second set of tires. But with that said, Ill keep running these until I cant stand the noise.

Mine are about to go on a 1000+ mile trip and a few days offroad. Will see how they hold up if the noise doesnt kill me.

I guess the noise is relative to the vehicle the tires are mounted on. I've got a Defender Soft Top. It's got just about zero sound deadening or insulating material in it, so the noise isn't even mitigated by closing the windows ...

As I said earlier, noise and weight are my only complaints. Performance has been excellent.

I've had mine for almost a year and about 15,000 miles, wearing good and no separation, going to the SE Rally tomorrow and another trip in VA in two weeks. These will be the 4th and 5th trips on these tires off-road and so far no problems. Knock on wood!
