SOLO-JK-X (sleep in Jeep build up)

I have a 2001 tj and want to do this sort of thing to mine, i go over roading and the place i go has a campsite, i d like to just camp in the jeep, or even using for college football tailgating parties

I just raised up my rear area storage system to allow the type of storage your after. I had 3.5" under my box and now have 8". The amount of objects using 8"-9" as one dimension is HUGE most small toolboxes, soft bags, most everything it would seem.....

I have done the wheelwell platform in my CJ back in the day to the current LJ set up. If I was solo I would be doing your platform at 9" high with a hinge behind the front seat in the LJ and would not lust for a Maggiolina.

I decided to do a test build.
I bought some cheap materials 4x1, 1/2 plywood and some steel angle.
I was hoping to mock something up that would hold my weight, just to get a feel for how it's going to work out.
Well the test fit went good. I'm going to add a few more braces and take it out for a overnighter thanksgiving weekend.
I might have 50bucks in the platform.
I also bought to padding and carpet(no photos yet).

Just over 7ft long, 41 inches wide in the back 23inches up front.

If the overnighter goes good. The plan will be to build the rear platform out of two drawers about 6 inches deep, 18 inch wide 41 inches long.
The front will be built out of 1inch square tubing and 3/4 inch ply wood.

I'll get you pictures of mine this week....but what you have is very similar.

Key differences in yours and mine:

• Mine is only 1.75" off the rear deck. This allows just enough room for the platform to clear the seat brackets. I like the idea of having shallow drawers underneath it though.

• Mine does not reach all the way to the back of the drivers seat, like it appears yours does. This allows someone taller than me to drive the jeep comfortably (move the seat back), and allows access to the first aid kit, etc that I have stored behind the drivers seat.

• The front section (where the passenger seat used to be) sits on top of a steel frame, which is bolted to the seat mounting points. This allows me to lift the entire front section out to access the storage area underneath. Never got around to making latches for it, so if I roll the jeep, it might get ugly.

The picture is a little deceiving. the drivers seat is back all The way. You could even recline it all the way. Under the platform I have a bungee cord holding it down. I don't think it would keep it from falling out in a roll over. I plan to incorporate some kind of anchor system when I get the drawers installed.

I covered it with some padding and carpet today. I'll post some pics soon.

How tall are you? I'm 5'7" and can sleep in the back of my cherokee without removing the seat. I thought the JK had a little more room than the XJ. For my future JK, I was playing around with the idea of using cables from the roll bar to suspend a sleeping platform above the non quit flat folded rear seat. That would eliminate alot of conversion time and trouble, would be easy to stow, and is lightweight. If you could find a folding passenger seat it would be even better. I travel light and use backpacking stuff so I don't really need the extra storage under a fixed platform.
