    Default Sound Deadening Options?

For those of us who have less...Uh....luxurious...rigs...(translated... no carpet, all steel interior, etc.) I'd like to get some opinions on sound deadening...

This thing is a bit loud....

I know ChuckB (FJ45LV) and myself (FJ45 Troopy) would like to use ours as DDs as well as not need comm equipment to talk to passengers while we're driving...so...

    I've considered the following:

    1. Rhino/Duraback liner on the tub, with carpet overlay...
    Pros: anti rust, easy cleaning
Con: Difficult to remove if I want to restore the rig in the future

    2. Dynamat with Carpet
    Pros...Really quiet!
Cons: Really expensive and hard to clean, difficult to remove?

    3. Paint/Carpet/Carpet Felt underlay
    Pros:...Simple, removable
Cons: Doesn't prevent rust...more difficult to clean.

Anyone have any experience with dynamat? Anyone have any tips that really worked for them?

heh... since I'm in car audio as a profession... yeah, I've used dynamat (and others) as well as a HECK of a lot of other products/processes.

If you intend to go with an energy absorbent, like Dynamat, I highly recommend EDead from Elemental Designs.. specifically their "V1 - se" product. It's a lot less expensive than Dynamat, has a better adhesive, and its sound deadening is much more effective on road noise (however not quite as effective on bass vibrations from speakers, as dynamat extreme) The most important areas to get are the front footwells, transmission/engine hump, and rear fender well areas.. so if you install mat and have some "extra"... that's where you can double up. Yes, doubling and tripling up has a nearly linear additive effect on energy absorption.

If it was my own vehicle, and I already had it stripped down like that... (and could justify the cost) - I'd wipe the whole floor and the lower half of the walls down with alcohol and then roll in as much EDead as I could fit, then pad, then carpet. Preferably flat-cut indoor/outdoor carpet, held in place by vise bars (and doorsills, etc) - and even carpet the walls below & between the windows. Make sure all of your weatherstripping is in good shape, and replace it if it's not! You'd be surprised how much extra noise comes in that way, vs. through your sheet metal.

If you don't want to afford Edead... you can probably skip the bedliner too - despite peoples' wishful thinking, it really does very little to reduce sound levels or heat transmission. Oh, and don't try to put any sound deadening stuff OVER bedliner, it doesn't work or stick very well. Better than nothing I suppose... but not that great.

    Hello Shovel,
Do you have a good source for Edead for the average joe. Recommend a supplier.

    Thanks

When I did my van interior I used some insulation with a foil backing underneath a one piece rubber mat that I got at J.C. Whitney.

Made a huge difference on the noise level and also provided a fair amount of heat insulation as well.

Wow guys! That's exactly the info I needed! Muchas Gracias!

Jay...how well does that stuff conform to footwells, etc? That looks like the ticket...plus carpet....

Unfortunately, no... even when I'm doing a company job, I still have to buy from Elemental Designs at their normal price (some of their other products are direct competitors w/ my company).

They sell direct through edesignaudio.com and on ebay as http://stores.ebay.com/Elemental-Designs

If it's in question... no, I have no business interest whatsoever in promoting this company's product. I've just found it to be the best cost/performance blend out there.

    Andrew,

My only recommendation would be to NOT use any advesive of stick on type insulation. I have done that before to great regret (permanent damage to the body). Use thick panels that velcro or screw on.

    Just my opinion.

It is just that I have used the spray on adhesives to secure carpets, used dynamat and even rhino lining.

They all work great, but you cannot revert back to stock easily, or at all, like to repaint for example.
