I want to echo agavelvr's suggestion. I have been using an iPad for several months now for land nav, and it works extremely well. One of my favorite apps is "ScenicMaps". They cover the US in three sections, at $10 each. The detail and flexibility is terrific, and the app will make excellent tracklogs if you do that sort of thing [I do, daily.] I supplemet this with a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx — which is small enough to hang on a lanyard around my neck when riding.

I also now use the inReach instead of a sat phone, as the form factors fits in my riding jacket pocket so I always have it with me. It gives me two-way comm, whether in emergency or just notifying my wife I'm fine or simply delayed. I've tested it from some very remote sites and it processes messages within a minute or two and gives the sender confirmation of message receipt by the satellites. I like it.
