I have two 12" Estwing axes both of which have knackered leather ring handles, I've wrapped insulation tape round for the time being. Has anybody got a good fix idea for new handles? I've had these for 50 years so they've served me well.Anything better than tape!!!!!

You could try paracord, or that grip tape wrap stuff for golf clubs. They also make that camo wrap for rifles, etc, that sticks to itself, it makes for a cushened grip.

These links might be helpfull. Iv'e seen a guy who broke the handle half way down, and fitted a wood handle over it, it looked pretty cool.

Have you checked on the garagejournal.com forum? A lot of serious tool collectors and fans on there. I can't remember an Estwing thread, but it's a busy forum and postings usually get dozens of responses in a day or so. That's where I'd go.

A friend has just re-handled his hammer, using a couple of old leather belts. Cut each piece roughly to shape, punched some holes with a wad punch (gasket punch) to make the oval hole for the handle, rivet it all back together and shape the handle to suit.
Nanny state time---- Leather dust is pretty bad for your lungs, wear a good dust mask.

Have you tried contacting Estwing directly to see what it cost to repair them? FWIW, new ones are only ~$30 so hopefully repairing one isn't too expensive.

Thank you kind sirs, I will try those tips :) my pop bought one for me and one for himself that was in 1962 and they were a vital part of our Carpenter and joinery work, so don't want them to go.
