secure storage solutions

so on our upcoming trip down the pan am hwy we're going to need some secure storage for our laptop and cameras and paperwork etc..
i like the idea of this: 89_1_.jpg
but at $300 it's kind of pricey and at inner dimensions: 12-16x12x12 i think we'll need more space. plus there's 16 inches of room between the front seats in our truck, so i want to fill it up.

the other option would be to build one, out of wood, kinda like what you see here, found on liferemotely.com: would this be enough for what we're trying to store? or should we go the safe route and try to find something that won't break the bank but fit the mounting points we have between the front seats?

I found a nice metal safe that fit under the seat in our pop-up for about $40. I'm sure someone would make something in the correct size. Mine held laptop, 2 DSLRs, passports, wallets etc etc.

It's not all that large, but when I get around to secure storage in my Tacoma, it may be with a Front Runner under seat vehicle safe.
