Arriving In Sydney
We were at the end of a 10 month odyssey, only a few days drive from the finish line and we had just discovered that we were off to the USA on route to circumnavigating the globe. Avid followers of this blog may have got the impression that our final few weeks in Australia were a haze of parties, beer, BBQs and beaches. And they would be right. There were beaches... and BBQs… and certainly beer, but they lacked that all-important ingredient that binds these wonderful things together. The sun. The coldest day everrecorded in Brisbane had just passed and it was grey, cloudy, and for the first time since we passed through the high plateaus of Tibet three months previously, I was cold.

Auxiliary Battery & Solar System
Over the past 7 years, I took the risk of powering all of my accessories from the starter battery in my Tacoma. Per a recommendation from Mario of Adventure Trailers, I installed a Blue Sea fuse block behind the back seat (after he saw the fiesta of wiring coming off the battery terminals under my hood). To that, I hard-wired my Engel 45L fridge/freezer, Yaesu 7800 HF radio, and inverter (for charging my laptop or any other 110V device). Thankfully this setup always worked well for me when out in the back-country, and with careful monitoring I never ended up with a dead starter battery. But twice I ended up killing that battery while parked in my driveway – once from leaving the fridge turned on for several days during warmer summer months (think: cold cerveza after a mountain bike ride), and once from accidentally leaving the 2M radio turned on for an entire week while I was out of town.

In 1940's post-war Britain The Rover Car Company was in decline, sales in Britain couldn't support the large company, and it was close to failing. The Wilks Brothers however had an idea to save the company. They were pleased with the versatility of their own American Military Jeep, but they soon realized the limited availability of parts outside of America would eventually lead to it's demise. The brothers began to think of a design, which could not only be the 'farmers best friend' at home, but successful in the lucrative export market. The Rover Car Company gave them 12 months to design and produce what is now the original Land Rover. Needless to say they succeeded and years later it's estimated that it was the first vehicle ever seen by 1/3 of the worlds population.
