Since Toyota released the re-designed 5th generation 4Runner, it's slowly but surely been building its credentials as a capable overlanding platform. We were even so impressed with the Trail edition that we named it our runner-up for the 2011 SUV of the Year Award. Luckily, the aftermarket is finally starting to support the vehicle, and we're seeing more and more accessories available for it. ARB is the latest to launch a new bolt-on for the "5th Gen" with it's latest skid plate system.
Anyone who spends a good deal of time on the trail will tell you that skid plates are an essential upgrade, you're going to eventually hit that one, random rock so perfectly that it takes your transmission. In addition to the slew of electronics and complicated bits you need to protect on modern vehicles, it's a safe bet that the ARB skids will be a great upgrade. The skid plate system, consisting of a front, and transmission plate, is made from pressed and folded 3mm steel, and created specifically for the platform the 4Runner is built on. There's even an specifically designed plate for those who opted for the KDSS (Kinetic Dampening Suspension System) as it slightly alters where the front panel needs to be positioned, due to a bit of a bulge from the system. It's available now for an MSRP of $434.29 and a little bit extra if you have KDSS.
