Prindville releases limited edition Land Rover Defender, and in the process completely misses the point

I know there have been numerous strides in refinement since what became the Defender was released in 1983. Through the various gearboxes, engines, and interior modifications it has always retained it’s utilitarian DNA. Sure, a 2012 Defender 110 when compared to a 110 from 1983 would certainly seem better equipped and much improved, but it was never to the point of luxury. There was always a specific purpose for the older brother in the Land Rover line - and it was being a simple, purposeful 4x4. The luxurious duties were always reserved for the Range Rover.

It seems that lately it’s become quite hip for an aftermarket company to modify the Defender to become some kind of luxury SUV. This usually involves fitting large wheels and bling, making it more at home in Chelsea than it’s proving grounds at Eastnor Castle. Prindville is the latest company to do so - and the latest company to completely miss the entire point of the vehicle. When you visit Prindville’s website [link] and follow it to the brand Range Rover you’ll find a spot for the Defender. After clicking on it, you’ll notice a variety of aftermarket accessory categories, my favorite being ‘Aerodynamics.’

Aerodynamics - really? The Defender makes the Jeep Wrangler look aerodynamic.

Making the Defender a performance luxury vehicle is like pointing at a rock and telling it to become a marshmallow - it’s just not supposed to happen. For its entire life the Defender has been an icon in the 4x4 world. I’m a fan of keeping it that way.

This isn’t to say that all bespoke special edition Defenders are complete garbage. Blaser [link], a german firearms manufacturer, has released a special edition Defender in collaboration with Land Rover. It’s themed along the lines of a hunting vehicle, has storage for up to 5 rifles plus ammunition, and adds some accessories which actually compliment the design and purpose of the vehicle. Winches, snorkels, and roof racks look a lot more appropriate than LED lights and a titanium sport exhaust.

Yay to Blaser, nay to Prindville.
